In Santiago we booked a six day bus tour to northern Chile. The tour, called Pachamama by bus (Pachamama is an Inka word meaning mother earth), would take us to San Pedro, visiting the most interesting places on the way.

On the first day we drove to La Serena, a beach city some 500 km north from Santiago. Not much to see on the way except the Panamerican highway. Driving in a comfortable minibus with a guide and 8 other travellers was still pleasant enough.

North from La Serena Chile is pretty much just desert. The vegetation diminishes the further north you drive, from bushes and cactuses to nothing at all. Just sand and rocks for hundreds and hundreds of miles. On the second day we drove to National Reserve of Pinguino de Humboldt and went for a boat tour to see some dolphins, penguins and sea birds. Then we drove to Bahia Inglesa, a small beach place, and stayed there for two nights.
