Today was another day lost in transit. Gina is sick of us being seated at the back of the plane (we have consistently been in row 28 of a 29 row aircraft!) because we take so long to get off the plane and join the rest of the group at the baggage carousel so she negotiated for us to be moved closer to the front of the plane (row 8) on our Lima to Santiago leg. Funnily enough we already had seats in row 5 for the Cuzco to Lima leg. Would you believe it?! There were more Kuna outlets at the airport and one of them had the exact same scarf that I first saw. It was in gorgeous mauves and aquas and featured a stylised llama pattern. Most surprising of all was that the ... read more

The air conditioning in our room didn't manage to bring the room temperature below 20°Celsius all night which made for hot and uncomfortable sleeping conditions. Despite that, and our body clocks trying to adjust to South American time, we managed to sleep for a few hours, although this was interspersed with a certain amount of wakefulness. We set an alarm for 7.00am and managed to get ourselves going about 7.20am so that we could have a leisurely breakfast before meeting our tour guide, Terry, in the foyer at 10.00am. The hotel had a delicious array of fruit, cereal, cooked breakfast and pastries to select from. We did our best to keep our calories in check choosing to start with fruit and cereal with natural yoghurt. Although that's all we would normally eat Bernie was tempted to ... read more

We were pleased to be able to get to Auckland Airport early as we'd not been able to do an on-line check in for this flight. It was part of our Round The World air ticket and we had mysteriously lost access to that part of the Qantas menu to confirm them. No matter - we were at the airport to allow us plenty of time to check in the 'old-fashioned' way, which suited us just fine. However, despite being some of the first to check in, we were allocated seats which were in completely different parts of the plane and when you have an 11 hour flight ahead of you the prospect of spending that time seated next to a complete stranger was unthinkable! The ever-vigilant Steve spotted it straight away and we stood our ... read more

After the tour, we tried to order some food in a vegetarian restaurant but no one spoke English so we had to give up and leave!lol we walked around a bit more and managed to get some food with our poor Spanish!the museo de artes visuales was great as it showcased lots of modern art in a beautiful building!the ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Paula Kay arranged for us to have a driver pick us up for the transfer to the hotel. We found him quickly right where they said he would be. He spoke English, but didn't talk much on the ride to the hotel. The traffic was heavy but kept moving, and we got to the Grand Hyatt (also recommended by Paula Kay) in about 45 minutes. We were able to check in right away although it was only 11:00 in the morning. The food on the plane wasn't the worst, but it was only airplane food so we were ready for a real meal. We ate a light lunch at the Atrium Lobby Lounge in the hotel and rested a bit before venturing outside to get some exercise. It turned out to be a hot afternoon ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642We are off for four weeks traveling flying to Santiago for a short stay first, then cruising across the South Pacific before flying home from Sydney. The flight from ABQ to IAH was fine and on time. Just the usual on that flight which we have made many times. We left home by 12:30 for a 2:30 p.m. flight and got there, parked, checked in and through security well before the flight was ready to board. It was perfectly on time. After dinner at the airport in Houston at Home Team Sports, we had some time to spend in the United Presidents Club before going to the gate for the overnight flight to Santiago. This time we got to the gate early and were in line for boarding group 2 before it got very ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642We landed at 10:00 and were met at the airport by a Celebrity rep and transferred by coach to the Kennedy Hotel. We passed shanty towns running along the banks of the river. Although tired, we freshened up, then walked to the Parque Arauco shopping mall, just 3 blocks away. It is Chiles leading Mall with designer shops and outside restaurants - it had a cosmopolitan, almost European feel to it. Here we caught the Touristik hop on hop off tour bus around the city. We thought that if we used our time and sleep later, it'd be a better way of getting over the tiring journey...it turned out to be the right decision. The city wasn't architecturally beautiful but had loads of history associated with the colonies and Spanish rule. It felt really ... read more
