It was one of those mornings-- I felt like I´d been dragged behind a catamaran and beaten with Monkey Puzzle tree branches. Usually when I wake up feeling this way, it´s well-deserved after a very memorable, though mostly forgoten (thankfully) night of raucous fun. However, on the 4th of July, el dia de indepencia de Estades Unides, I awoke feeling that there was no justice in the world. I was being punished for a night of meheim I didn´t have--at least, I´m pretty sure I didn´t. I went over the previous day step by step, trying to uncover the mystery of my outrageous headache. I´d had enough water. I´d only had a mini-size bottle of wine with dinner (really mini). Then it dawned on me--it was the Spanish. My brain was swollen after the work out ... read more

Ok, Im going to try to keep this short as we have a few blogs to catch up on. As Gray said in his last blog we decided to get the Navimag Ferry to Puerto Montt. We were having a few problems getting North by bus as the RN40 is closed for the majority of the winter due to bad weather and dodgy roads. Even after hearing that this option was a Chilean torure technique we took it .... were we mad!!?..... The first day on the boat was great!! We woke up to a wicked sunrise and scenery. There were some seals swimming along with us for a while which I absolutely loved!! We were out of season so the ferry was quiet, only 15 or so passengers.... oh and 75 trucks of cows, sheep ... read more

Rain. rAin. raIn. raiN. RAIN. The patagonian region of Chile is wet. Very wet. From arriving in Puerto Natalas a week ago, until leaving the Navimag Ferry in Puerto Montt, I believe I have seen the sun once for a few hours as we boarded the boat. Rainy, cold, grey skies. Apparently we are actually having nicer weather than the previous week- with its 10 meter waves and a full day delay due to the storms. Too bad the boat ride didn't make up for it. The offseason rate of $290US was just an overpriced cattle car filled with backpackers. The tours of the different channels and such are only found during the High Season. I guess. Me, yeah dissappointed but some people on board were downright miffed afterwards. If you see Alexia and want to ... read more

First off, a few words about Santiago. I've heard loads of people complain that it's expensive, polluted, "too European" (whatever that's supposed to mean), you name it. In our book, Santiago is a sleek and modern city, and we enjoyed every minute we spent there. It's more expensive than the other places we'd been in the trip, true, but then Chile has a functional economy and besides it's a lovely city so we weren't complaining. Apparently it's got a bit of a smog problem but having spent lots of time in London (and Quito for that matter!) we didn't even notice it. We'd also managed to collect our new tent from the post office (bought on eBay, always a risk when abroad!) and were ready for the next leg of the journey: camping and trekking in ... read more

As the title suggests Chris and I have recently disembarked from a 4-day journey north along Chile´s Pacific coast. It was something I´d been looking forward to for a long time, as the cruise was a big expense for someone on my budget, and I had never been on a boat for such a long period of time, so this would be a new experience for me. The weather, however, was the usual chilly, blowy combination we've got used to - with a fair bit of cloudy and drizzly thrown in for good measure!! I'd like to be able to say that the Navimag cruise was 4 days of cultured chat with fellow shipmates, with time spent admiring the stunning beauty of Chilean fjords. That, however, would be a total lie!! The weather didn´t lend itself ... read more

I am now in Puerto Montt, Chile. Tonight we are getting a boat south into the glaciers of Patagonia. It is for four nights and five days but we are not entirely sure what is included as our Spanish is pretty shaky. Just been to the supermarket and stocked up on biscuits and wine, just in case! After leaving Buenos Aires, we travelled to Sierra de la Ventana which is about 8 hours south of Buenos Aires. It was a small countryside village with a MILLION stray dogs. Most of you will know that they are not my favourite animal, but they are even more scary when they travel in packs and might be carrying rabies! As we got off the bus we were met by two particularly mangy-looking ones. By the time we had fought ... read more
