So on to the bus to Chillan, buying the ticket was incredibly easy - just point at the time you want on the computer screen, pick your seat and your ticket is printed it even tells you what bay it leaves from. Your bag is checked into the hold (and not released till you produce your luggage tag), the bus is cool, comfortable, has toilets WITH toilet paper, seats that recline futher than airplane sates and more leg room, plus people get on to sell drinks and snacks (not just ordinary snacks either, we had a whole Patisserie). Wow. Chillan was really nice, a bit off the tourist track so I stayed in a B+B with my own double bed for a fiver. It has a beautiful Plaza de Armas (each town in Chile has one ... read more

From Curanilahue, we rode on through major forestry plantations, small farming communities and rolling countryside to Lake Lanalhue where we came across a very nice small hotel with a great room over looking the pretty lake. It was a bit more upmarket than we normally go for but we were in the off-season and managed to bargain the price down. Besides, it was getting late, we were cold and it looked like rain was coming. The man who owns it used to work in a bank in Santiago, and we could tell from his always-beaming face that he knew he'd made the right decision when he bought up here. A late start the next day and our first big mountain pass to climb to get us out of the coastal plains and back into the main ... read more

We´d heard lots about the Panamericana (or Ruta 5), the major highway that runs roughly parallel with the Andes for much of the length of South America. So, after a couple of days of eating dirt, at Linares we decided to test ride some smooth tarmac. And smooth it was! Although the speed limit is 120 kilometres an hour here, the lanes are wide, and there is a clean, smooth shoulder, and hardly any traffic for a major highway. We even managed to overtake a couple of locals on bikes and a horse-drawn cart. Like most highways, the Ruta 5 wasn´t built for the scenery, and apart from having the Andes on our left shoulder for the day, it was unspectacular riding. We left the highway at Parral (still in Región Maule) and headed west, for ... read more

Two months into my time here in Chile I have been exposed to many new cultural experiences. Today, however I was met with a new one when I stepped out of the university cafeteria... Time: 14:33 Place: Nuestra Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción Weather: Nice Scene: A student comes tearing in my direction, in full sprint. He is pulling a hood off of his head so he can see better as he comes straight ahead at full steam. Behind him are three riot police officers, in full gear wearing helmets and carrying shields with heavy vests doing their very best to catch up to the athletic twenty-something running in the other direction. A fourth police officer comes from the other side, takes the angle, it seems already fated that he catch the sprinting student. The ... read more
