Today was an early day. We had to get up at 4:30 for our 5:00am departure. Today’s adventure is to the geysers. It was dark and cold. The hotel packed us a lunch since we wouldn’t get the morning breakfast. Emilio came and got us again today, yea. Bad news was the Brazilian family was back. Oh well. There were several other groups too and Helena (from Australia) who was traveling along. All and all, a good group. It was quiet on the drive up (1 hour and half). We all tried to sleep but the roads were curvy and bumpy so I would call it just a rest. We arrive and the temperature was 32. We are glad we wore the right clothes. Seems the colder it is the better the geysers and 32 is just an ok temp for the geysers, that’s why you go so early in the morning because as the day warms, the geysers stop.
Oh wow, the scenery was wonderful. We saw a variety of geysers and walked all over the field. The elevation is around 15-16000 feet (4350 meters) so you had to walk slowly or you would get light headed
and winded. After spending about 40 minutes at the first stop, we drove to the second stop. We could actually see the 2
nd stop from the first but with the light air it’s best to drive. The second stop is the larger geysers (larger holes but they don’t shoot up). These are the ones you can fall into so you really had to stay behind the rocks around them. Of course the son of the Brazilian couple didn’t listen. We spent around 30 minutes walking around here and then the guide set us up a breakfast. We ate and just talked with everyone and enjoyed talking. We talked with Helena a lot. We will see her again in Patagonia.
We then all got back into the van and headed back. Along the way we spotted more of the Alpaca and alpaca like animals and flamingos, donkeys,….. We stopped in a small town, Machuca and walked around there for a bit. After that we went to the hotsprings but it was not part of our tour. All the people but Helena, and Shelly and I got out. The driver then took us back to town.
We napped and worked on the computer some. Shelly napped while I worked and I napped while she worked. We then got ready to go out. Emilio was coming over around 7 (didn’t get here till about 7:30 though) and we took him out for a beer. He let us copy the pictures he took of us over the days and at the bar his girlfriend joined us and brought us a DVD with all the pictures, not just the best ones. We had a blast talking with them and you could order pizza in the bar so we did. We spent several hours eating pizza, drinking local beer and talking. It was a blast.
Then home and back to bed. Tomorrow is a travel day. 2 flights so we have no idea when we will get to our next hotel and if there will be any internet. I’ll post again when I can.
