So, here we are, in Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia, or what they call here
fin del mundo or 'end of the world'. Two hour flight and totally different environment: mountains with icy tops and colder air give these days a winter vacation feeling. Even though the weather is holding. Yesterday was a bit colder and cloudy but today we had a perfectly sunny and warm day!
Yesterday we took a boat excursion through Beagle Channel (where Atlantic and Pacific mix) to the Estancia Harberton, the first estancia in Tierra del Fuego founded by an English guy in 1800's. On our way there we spotted animals again

. Sea lions, pinguins and cormorants... All of which much more active than in Patagonia where they pretty much lay around in the warm sun. The catamaran could get really close to them so it was really funny to watch them mess around on the beach!
Today instead we went for a hike to the Tierra del Fuego National Park. On our way there we met a Danish guy (John) who happens to be a biologist and a guide (just got off a ship that went from Puerto Madryn all the way to
Antarctica via Falkland and Georgia islands). He is also a passionate bird watcher. So we joined him in his walks through the park and saw A LOT of birds, but this time we actually got to know their name and more info about them and their environment! It was really cool to have met John, a really nice guy. Amongst others, we saw several species of geese (Steamer geese seem to be rare), but also the most southern parrots (!), and even a pigmea owl (dwerguiltje)! But next to the birds, the scenery is amazing too. Green fields in flower (beginning of the spring here) with white mountains in the background...
But this part of the vacation is also almost over, tomorrow we're hitting the road again. Back to eastern Patagonia and its mountains. But first we're gonna score some King Crab for the dinner tonight! This place is famous for it!
Shell hillIn other words natives dumped the shells they ate around their tent - creating these archeological hills.
ParrotsQuite south (and cold) for them!

Zie jullie over anderhalf week! Groeten, JW & Tajana
