steak
get in my belly Finally ... Argentina! We had been hearing so many great things about it (especially the steak) and it did not disappoint.
We arrived in Salta after a long (around 10 hours i think) but scenic bus ride. I think I spent most of my time just staring out the window of the bus with my eyes glued to the mountains, valleys, farms, and little towns. I'm amazed at myself for being able to think about nothing for so long. It was already 9-ish pm by the time we arrived at our hostel in Salta and cleaned up a little. I personally wanted to grab something quick to eat around the neighbourhood (I was hungry and it was getting late), but our travel companions were determined to get some steak. Unfortunately our hostel recommended a restaurant a good distance away and I became crankier and crankier while we were walking there. But that all went away once the steak came. It was heavenly - tender, juicy, full of flavour. Myra and I barely said a word while we ate because we were too busy shoving food in our mouths and smiling. It was so satisfying. We're both so in love with
the cows here.
Our time in Salta was really relaxing (to compensate for the stress of passing time in San Pedro) - lots of walking around. We walked up to a lookout point to enjoy views of the city and that was pretty much it. The walk up was so tiring ... it was 1070 (steep) steps and we stupidly decided to walk it during the mid-day sun. Sometime during our ascent poor Myra realized she left her rings during one of our sunblock breaks and had to go back down a to get them (it was not close at all). We were with two other people and none of us even mentioned accompanying her. We just said ... we'll wait for you here. Take your time. (Sucker!)
The views we had at the top were nice, but sad to see the city was a little bit hazy. Not sure if it was pollution or dirt from the nearby fields. At least we got some exercise to work off the three nights of steak we had in Salta.
Oh - we also went shopping. Our first time since our trip began! It was great - nice clothes at
end of walk
absolutely pooped good prices. What more can you ask for? I'd get more if I could fit it in my backpack.
Forgot to mention that it's nice to be in a country where we always get hot showers. Peru and Bolivia showers were unreliable ... hot water was not always guaranteed and shower pressure was hit or miss too. Sometimes we'd be shivering in and out of the shower since it got so cold at night in Peru and Bolivia. But now showering is something i look forward to again instead of being a low point in my day. Oh how the little things we usually take for granted can make you so happy.
Salta marked the point where our travel family had to part ways. Even though it had only been a week since we met them, we grew quite attached to them and our group dinners. Luckily one of the girls was going to the same destination as us so we weren't left completely alone again. Phew.
Our next stop is Cafayate for some wine tasting ... time to up our alcohol tolerance.
