MalbecMalbecMalbec

Malbec, the best tipple in Argentina.
Anyone with taste will know that Argentina is particularly good at wine, in particular a fabulous variety called Malbec that annoyingly is not (cannot be?!) produced in Australia... shame. Mendoza is the heartland of the wine region in Argentina; it´s hot, dry and there´s not much else to do but, well, drink wine. We did managed a tour of some wineries on push bikes, 3 out of the 5 bikes that we and our friends took with us quickly ended up with punctures... For the record, I don´t recommend this medium for wine tasting!

Despite a slightly lacklustre city (it never rains, EVER, so the streets are filthy!), the region itself is quite lovely, moreso as we headed northwards into the Salta region, also famous for wine but here the drop is a white called Torrontes.

Salta is in a desert-like region with some quite bizarre rock formations in a lovely natural setting. We found a lovely Irish boy named Jonathan to accompany us and jumped in a 1.2L buzzbox to drive ourselves along a 400km stretch of the surrounding area... 200km of which was a heavily corrugated gravel road. 6 hours later we arrived at our destination Cafayate

Simple food here but fresh, plentiful and always delicious.
for the night.

Amazed to find our cheapest hostel yet at $5 per night we happily settled in to our very comfortable beds and dropped off for a very sound sleep... for a little while anyway. Soon after bedtime Rachel awoke literally covered in creepy, crawly bedbugs... covered. Over the next few days Rachel entire body had swelled to look like a big pink pin cushion... in reverse. Not pretty, I´ve never seen a bottle of calamine lotion disappear so quickly. Lessons learnt... be wary of cheap hostel beds... they´re cheap for a good reason!!
