So after a not very exciting trip to La Quiaca which is the border crossing between the two countries, we walked in the dark for about 15 minutes with all our gear to wait for the Argentian border to open. We didnt have to wait long, got our stamp and then walked another 5 minutes to the Bolivian border, where we had to wait again for their border to open due to the time difference. Whilst waiting we saw some Bolivians trying to escape across the border, some got through but others were held back. I guess they just tried again the next day.

We then walked up the hill to the bus station in Villazon, where people everywhere are trying to get you to go on their bus, which was an experience I can tell you. Still we sorted it out and caught the bus to Tupeza.

The reason we thought we would go here was that Butch Cassidy was here at some time in the dim and distant past, and you can go and see the sights. However when we got to the hostel they were running a trip to Uyuni the next day, and they wanted us to go on it to fill the 4x4 up. so kept telling us that there wasnt anything to see!!! In the end we booked on the trip, so for the afternoon we just wandered around the town. We decided we would walk up to the lookout for sunset later, so had a little siesta only to wake up after dark :-(

So that was that, the next morning we were up bright and early for the 4 day trip across the salt flats.
