Boco District BA
this is a very colourful street where the italian immigrants lived in the old town of Bueos Aires in the Boco district We arrived early on Monday morning (01/10/07) at B.A. airport and took a bus to San Telmo area where we found a very cheap Hostel, Hotel Carly. For just $10 per night between two of us with shared bathrooms, very simple and basic but cheap. We wandered around and checked out the sights. BA is a really lovely city, small and very much like London but with a very french architechtural slant here and there.
Tuesday (02/10/07) We headed off into the main central part of town and went shopping tee hee. It was really nice as we felt like richer people than we really are. Purchased several items of clothes from Boutique type shops for a pittance which appealed to my miser inner self. Then we booked for tonight to go to a Tango supper, with a free City tour tomorrow and then on a day boat trip to Uruguay on Thursday. Hopefully we will also be able to attend a Polo game at the weekend but it is weather dependant.
By the way, Happy Birthday Stevie, in case you don´t get my text.
Jo and I got all dressed up in our new purchases and went
Mad Tree
in a park of the San Juan are of B.A. to the Tango supper looking very dapper indeed. We were greeted with a Champagne reception with canapes (we made sure we got our fair share of Champers and more ha ha). Then we went upstairs and were seated ready for our 3 course meal which was really delicious. We had our photos taken by a pro photographer (I guess they´ll try to flog them to us later) and then the show began. It was really interesting to actually see some really good Tango dancing and costumes but it´s probably not a favourite dance style of mine. None the less the evening was really enjoyable and a perfect end to a really lovely day.
I have been thinking about coming back to South America to live and learn Spanish and I have now found the place to come back to.
Wednesday (03/10/07)
We slept in, as outside our Hotel, there appears to be the busiest nite life of the whole San Telmo area. There is a square just up from us and along our whole street bars are side by side. They open at the earliest at midnight and compete for sound space playing various styles of music on
Evitas grave
this is the grave of Evita who was buried in her familys mausoleum in the Recoleta cemetery in B.A. top of each other all nite long. Sleep is very musical and occasionally broken by shouting. A very interesting and lively place to be.
We took a stroll around town through the central shopping area to the more upmarket areas of Palermo and Recoleta. We of course visted the infamous Recoleta Cemetery which is huge and houses many many wealthy families of Argentina´s Mausaleums which very interesting choices of architechture for the buildings and each one is stacked full with wooden caskets/coffins and urns. Very macarbe.
We met our tour bus at the very distinguished Alvear Palace Hotel (where we did have time to snatch a quick tea/fruit juice and chocolates) and went on our free city tour. Today there was an important football match at the local Boco teams stadium and the whole place went crazy (you know how the Argentinians like their football) it really did feel a little bit mad. And the Brits get a bad press for their football hooligan behaviour !!! check these guys out then !!! City tour was interesting and good to work out our bearings. This nite we decided to frequent one of the good ol noisy bars outside our window for some local Jazz. LOvely.
Thursday (04/10/07)
Early up today to check in and get our tickets issued for the 9am boat to Uruguay. Its very misty today so the view won´t be too good. We ate breakfast on the boat and then mostly slept and read our books. 3 hours later and we arrived in Uruguay (more stamps for the old passport - Yippee) We were taken on very new coach to Colonia which is a really small city. Very pretty and quiet, with a strong colonial influence (although not sure which colony ha ha). Wandered around for a bit and then got a tour. the old town is especially nice. chilled out in a cafe for a bit before heading back to the port for our 3 hr journey home. A long day all in all but every bit worth it.
Friday (05/10/07)
Really large thunder storms today all day. I mean REALLY BIG. rain like you´ve never seen before (except perhaps in India during monsoon season). A good opportunity to repack, reorganise and repack again. A definate need to visit the post office and mail some stuff home i think. sent a box load of stuff home via boat for 15 quid. getting more expensive to do this now but i feel more confident about it getting home. Phoned home and found ma and pa returned from their NY adventure all intact and in receipt of the Bolivia package, phew. Not looking good for Polo this weekend after all this rain, bummer.
Saturday (06/10/07)
Up early and dressed for Polo in the desperate hope of a game despite yuk rain of yesterday. Today is a glorious sunshiny HOT day perfect for kicking back those diblets (or whatever they´re called) But alas today we are not to find out. Boo Hoo. Polo cancelled. purchased overnite tickets to get outta here tonight direct (on proper comfylux, lie down and sleep, sleeper bus) to Iguacu falls. spent the rest of the day
