Things are winding down but not without a ton of work and play and of course another Argentine Crisis.
My 25th Birthday I turned 25 about a mth ago but I have been slacking on my blog entries so I thought I would start with that. I had a fantastic Birthday thanks to all of my friends especially Jennifer! We had a huge American Southern food fest in her house, which the Argentines seemed to like. From there we made it out to one bar where a bunch of people met up with us and the bar gave us a few free bottles of sparkling wine to celebrate. From there we went to La Mulata, a really cool night club, whose owner happens to be dating our program coordinator, so we got first class service. We made it home by 8am, the feather crown finally came off as we both passed out until 3pm. Im getting too old for this!
Ashes As the farmer/Government fight rages on around export taxes the slightly more breathable air has now become a recipient of a natural disaster "Volcano Ash" Warning emails from the US Embassy (which by the way they titled "Warden
Message") came a few days ago warning US citizens to be mindful of the ash, wear long sleeve shirts and if you have asthma, masks are advisable. The dreaded ash will reach Buenos Aires in the next few days. Last night we were out and about and looked up to see what looked like light snow in the street lights and it turns out the ash which was caught in the atmosphere over Buenos Aires Province started to fall.
A little background info on this Ash problem: The Chaiten volcano in southern Chile erupted on May 5th, about 6 days ago and the ashes from this eruption quickly spread over southern Argentina and Chile. It is an enormous slow-moving cloud which first affected Bariloche, spread to Mar del Plata (beach resort on the other side of the country and is now arriving in Buenos Aires. And stealing a stat from the paper: It’s raising health concerns for some eight million people. Airlines are cancelling a ton of flights (also due to an airline strike for one of them)
The craziest part is that they are predicting a late stage eruption with a much larger explosion that could collapse
the volcano's cone and cause even more problems for both Argentina and Chile.
Tears It is the time of good bye parties. (mine too in about a mth!) This weekend we said goodbye to a good friend of mine. Arvil Gonzalez. He has made us laugh for the last 5 months and has truly been an inspiration and a huge help to me with my workshops. I will miss him a ton but hopefully we will run into each other again. Wendy, Liza, Lindsay and Jess are all leaving very soon so more goodbye parties will come soon.
Chants El León (the “lion") AKA Estudiante of La Plata (Awesome soccer team which plays 5 blocks from my house) and Boca Juniors (One of the best teams in Argentina) played today in La Plata. A bunch of us got tickets and after recovering from Arvil's party we made our way to the stadium for AMAZING Churripan (sausage sandwiches with chimichurri sauce (YUMMY!!!)). Then we went into the game .
Background info: Estudiantes just lost their spot in the Copa Liberator (Latin American Cup) because Boca beat them in a cup game on the 13th 2-1 knocking them out
of the finals. So this league game was pretty important. They are vying for the league title now. Boca is still playing double games and Estudiantes has been able to catch a little rest.
So during the game we jumped and did the chop like crazy (standard cheer form 😉) tried to figure out the words to the songs and sang along. BUT during half time a few of our friends ran to the bathroom.. and the guys all went up for beers. Leaving 4 girls to reserve about 10 seats. Soo this guy comes and tries to sit in the seat beside me and I told him they were taken. The discussion got heated and I had to get up and start screaming at the boludo (idiot) to leave. Some random guy sitting by us came over and started to try and talk to the guy…. that’s when things got UGLY! They started screaming at each other and eventually began to fist fight and then a chocking attempt landed the boludo in my lap. I kicked the guy off screaming at him and about 20 other random guys from around the area came parading over and picked the
guy up and threw him out.
Overall it was a blast and Estudiantes won 1-0!!
