While in Beunos Aires, we toured the famous Recoleta Cemetery. It was strange to be touring a cemetery as if it was an amusement park, oohing and ahhing at the magnificent marble works. An amazing thing about the place is that the tombs descend into the earth a long way....we were able to glimpse one open mausoleum that dropped about six meters down! Tiny caskets brought us back to reality as we imagined the loss of a little one. Much of the place is in pretty good shape, but there were lots of dilapidated, broken crypts that needed some serious attention.

The place is huge, occupying a couple of city blocks, and has 4700 crypts.

Hope you like our little photo documentary of this place!

It looks like rays of sunshine, but it's actually mould growing in areas where it never gets direct sun.

There are many feral cats that guard the crypts. We think they are kept around to keep the mice at bay!

A shallow crypt. Some of them dropped a few stories into the ground.
