Chamberlain's men lined up on both sides of this road to accept General Lee's battle flags, parole his soldiers, and stack their arms. The Confederate soldiers were fed and those wounded received care. Under conditions of parole they were allowed to keep their rifles for hunting, and those who had horses kept them to ride home.
