How did they do that?

I never did get an adequate explanation of how the monks built these unassailable monasteries on top of these rocks. Our local tour guide who we met up with inside the monastery said that all the building supplies were hoisted by cranes up to the top of these pinnacles but how did anyone get up on top in the first place? They certainly didn't have climbing cleats or crampons back in the Middle Ages.
