As we approach Guttenberg, we stop at a vista point for our first view of the Mississippi from above.

Saturday, June 5th We break camp early in the morning because of an unexpected rainstorm and drive east toward the Mississippi River and up to Guttenberg, Iowa, a center for German immigrants in the 1840’s. Many families, including the Muellers and Fischers (Leigh’s family), traveled through here on the way west to Iowa farmlands where they settled.
