Brown-hooded Kingfisher
Hi Anna - fascinating blog! I've recently returned from Southern Africa and, with my (still) limited knowledge of ZA birds, I believe this is a Brown-hooded Kingfisher. I can't quite make out the bill, but it appears to be completely red - if the upper bill were black, it would be a Striped Kingfisher. I'm 99% sure it's not a Striped Kingfisher.
