Pha That Luang, the Great Stupa is a major symbol of Laos with a strange history. It was destroyed in 1828 by the invading Thais. The French restored the structure in 1900. It is believed that the original was built in the 1500s on top of a 13th century Khmer temple and that the Khmer temple hadbeen built on a 3rd century Indian Buddhist temple.
