S.S. Maheno
FRA: L’épave du S.S. Maheno. Construit en 1905 comme bateau passager de luxe pour les traversées vers la Tasmanie, le vaisseau fut transformé en bateau-hôpital durant la Première Guerre Mondiale, avant de retrouver sa fonction d’origine. En 1935 il fut déclaré démodé et remorqué de Melbourne vers le Japon pour finir en métal de récupération. Mais un puissant cyclone l’échoua sur Fraser Island. Durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, l’épave du Maheno servit aussi de cible d’entraînement aux pilotes de la RAAF.
ENG: The wreck of the S.S. Maheno. Built in 1905 as a luxury passenger ship for crossings to Tasmania, the ship was transformed into a hospital ship during World War One, before returning to its original use. In 1935 it was declared outdated and towed from Melbourne to Japan for scrap metal. But a powerful cyclone beached it on Fraser Island. During World War Two the Maheno wreck also served as a practice target for RAAF pilots.
