These columns surround the whole square that faces St. Peters and the Sistine Chapel. There's also 2 fountains like the one in the picture. Notice the huge line of people waiting to get into St. Peter's...we were glad we got up early to see everything and avoided that line!

We started out our second day in Rome with a very early alarm. We knew we wanted to see the Vatican and Sistine Chapel and heard that the line was horrible, so we chose to get up early and be in line before it opened at 8:15.
