Votivkirche - Votive Church. Built in 1856-1879 to commemorate Fran Josef's escape from an attempted assassination near the site. Rooseveltplatz 8. "In the Maximilians-Platz , with its planted grounds, between the Währinger-Str. and the Universitäts - Str., rises the Votive Church (Heilandskirche), the first important modern church in Vienna, erected in the Gothic style from designs by Ferstel in 1856-79, in memory of the Emperor's escape from assassination in 1853. We left Budapest at 8:00 a.m. for Vienna. The coach followed the M1 motorway through Hungary and then picked up the A4 in Austria. The drive took us through the Little Hungarian Plain, an area of rolling countryside south of the Danube in Western Hungary.
