Wieliczka Salt Mine. Diorama of a miner pulling a barrels of salt in a wooden sanice, a mine sledge. They were made of two parallel beams that connected perpendicular crossbars. There were wooden rollers between the skids. A sanice was drawn by miners and later by horses. DSC_0600

The salt mines of Wieliczka have been in operation for over 700 years. Extraction of salt from surface brine began in the 13 century. Under the patronage of Kazimierz III the Great (1310-1370), extraction mining began in earnest in the 14th century.
