Hello everyone. If we have kept track correctly, this is Saturday and you are all probably enjoying the weekend. For us, it’s just the next day of vacation – actually it is one week exactly since the day we left St Louis. We have gotten a couple of comments about the blog and apparently it is being enjoyed by at least some of our readership, so we will continue to post these entries.
As we’ve explained on previous trips, we could not possibly bring enough clothing to last for the whole trip, so today was laundry day. It’s not fun and hardly warrants any details, but we got it completed and have a full supply of clean clothes again (except for one missing sock).
Janet went to the International Café for a quick breakfast sandwich because they have started the Knitters & Knatters meetings today. She did not have time for a big breakfast. David went to the buffet a little later and had a full breakfast. He then went to the Princess Theater expecting to hear details about the next port, but instead it was someone talking about Identify Theft. He sat through that
Crown Princess
plowing through the waves and then stayed for the description of Punta Arenas where we will be in a couple of day.
Around 10:00 the captain announced that we were coming out of the inner island passageway along the various fjords ending our nice smooth sailing. He said we would be back in the Pacific for about 6 hours. Out in the ocean there were 5 meter wave crests from the southwest and 40 knot gusts from the northwest, so it was going to be pretty bumpy. He was right about the bumps but it took until around 5:00 PM because he had slowed down to make the ride slightly smoother. During the afternoon David tried to take a couple of pictures of the sea but it doesn’t really show the wind, or the cold, or the rain (off and on all day). So this was not to our most comfortable day of sailing – actually one of the roughest.
For lunch we went to the Crown Grill where they were having a Pub Lunch. The menu was a choice of Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, Steak & Kidney Pie, or Ploughman’s Lunch. We shared a table
with two ladies from England and we each had Fish & Chips. David found an English beer to have with lunch while Janet brought her own cup of tea. The two ladies each had the Ploughman’s Lunch, which turned out to be a deconstructed ham & cheese sandwich with fries.
Then Janet went to a movie in the theater called “Florence Foster Jenkins” with Meryl Streep. She had wanted to watch it yesterday, but it was being shown out by the pool Under the Stars, and that would have just been too cold for her to enjoy. So she had planned ahead and saw it in the comfortable seating. It was just as well to be sitting down for a couple of hours instead of pin balling around elsewhere in the ship.
They were having a sale on some of the items in the gift shop today. David got a couple of cruise T-shirts and Janet got a nice jacket. Janet then went down to get one of her fancy coffees (Salted Carmel Mocha Coffee) and David went up to the Swirl Boys and got a bowl of vanilla ice cream over a couple of chocolate chip cookies.
This afternoon we decided not to go up to deck 18 where the motion of the ship would be at its worst, so we stayed in our cabin until dinner time and had some of the wine we had brought from the Santiago Winery. Then we went on to dinner at the appropriate time. There were all 6 of us at the table tonight. Janet had a mushroom tartlet for appetizer and Roaster Duck Breast as her entrée. David had shrimp cocktail, a bowl of lamb & barley soup, and Prime Rib as his main course. For dessert Janet had coffee latte ice cream with chocolate syrup and David had Black Forest cake.
After dinner we went to the Princess Theater for a show that was a combination of a magic act and the shipboard singers and dancers. It was more of the later with a little of magical tricks. Unfortunately it was very popular and very crowded with people sitting the aisles. In addition there were people who couldn’t keep from chattering amongst themselves during the show. They really detracted from the enjoyment for all the rest of us. But it was still a good show.
We will be out in the ocean again after midnight for another couple of hours. At that time the captain predicts the winds will be gusting to 50 knots, so we will try to stay safely tucked in our beds. Actually this would have been kind of poor weather for exploring on shore, so just as well that we could spend it inside the ship enjoying all their amenities and activities. We don’t want to make it sounds like we didn’t enjoy the day, it just would have been better with better weather.
Tomorrow we will be sailing by the Amalia Glacier. Unfortunately we will be sailing past between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, so we need to end here and try to get some sleep. We will give you an update tomorrow.
The latest news from Stephanie is that she has gotten to go home. She passed the necessary tests and they let her out of the hospital and home with her family. GREAT! And Elizabeth reports that the cat and the house are both doing fine too. Thanks.
