March 12th---
Neptune day is a traditional celebration that happens every semester on the ship. It is supposed to occur when our ship crosses the equator, but due to poor weather and timing, we had Neptune Day today. Basically this is what happened…first we are woken up by drums and whistles around 7 am (not very excited about that, considering the fact that I had no classes today and I got zero sleep in India). Then we all eat breakfast and head up to the pool deck. Captain Jeremy dressed up as King Neptune. His entire body was covered in green paint and he had a crown, fancy ring and trident. He sat on a lounge chair (which was supposed to be his throne) on the top of the pool. Everyone lines up in their bathing suits and one by one gets this green gunk poured onto their heads by the crew. Then they jump into the pool, get out, kiss a fish, and then you kiss Queen Minerva’s feet and King Neptune’s ring. If they pass all of these tasks, they are rewarded with a certificate.
The craziest part of the day is the head shaving! People donate
their hair, but not just by cutting it short. Instead they get shaved completely…..yes BALD! Surprisingly more girls did it then boys I think? The cool thing was that they donated all the hair, not just the pony tails. I DID NOT DO IT! Don’t worry if you are reading this, I still have my long hair on my head. Honestly, I would have cried! I don’t know how they were so brave? 3 of my friends got convinced to do it. I had no idea so when I went to dinner and 3 girls just walked in completely bald to sit near me….well I was overwhelmed. I even watched at Neptune Day some of them get their heads shaved and I felt freaked out. It is going to take so long to grow back and it’s going to look so awkward when it starts to grow out again. OMG! I just can’t believe so many girls did it and are not upset at all. Oh well! I told them that they were really brave and things like, “good for you, I could never do that”. I think overall I would say that 20 or 30 boys did and 15
or 20 girls did it. CRAZY!!!
Today we got our invitations and menu selections for the Masquerade Ball. Everyone on the ship is really excited for it….I think part of that reason is the menu. We get filet mignon! Also, we get to all dress up. If you have been reading my blog you would know how dirty and gross we all look all the time, so it is a really nice change for everyone on the ship to be all cleaned up!
Our clocks advance a half an hour tonight. We are going to gain 2.5 hours before Singapore (in only 3 days time). I’m soooo tired! I think they are serious when they say to us, “you can sleep this summer”. But really they should just say, “You can sleep when you’re dead”, because now I have so many plans this summer. All of these kids I’m meeting on this trip want to go on road trips this summer or come stay with me. Mostly because they are from other countries and have visas for a couple of weeks. My friend is definitely coming after the trip to stay with Charli and we’re meeting up with other East Coasters to go to Philly, Manhattan, Washington DC and Boston. This works out really well because we have places to stay in every city. I’m really excited!!! It is sort of like the trip never ends. Seriously though….all I ever want to do now is travel!
Other than that, there is nothing new to report. Tomorrow night is the crew talent show. Also, we still don’t have any news about Japan. It isn’t looking good though! There are rumors going around that we might have to go somewhere else. I have no idea…I guess only time will tell? I’m just so lucky that our ship wasn’t there when it happened. After seeing the footage all I thought about was how lucky we were that we weren’t there yet. Ugh! I just wish I knew more about what is going to happen to our voyage because of this incident.
