March 19 – 25 The First Week It’s Sunday morning or is it Wednesday morning? It doesn’t matter, we lost track of what day it is.... days ago. Our room is comfortable, roomy and we have a balcony. Plenty of room to run around without stepping on each other. Our cabin steward is Edwin. Whenever we open the door, he’s standing right there. I believe we’re his only cabin. We have breakfast on the Lido deck. We stroll around till we find an isolated spot and hide there until other guests start gathering around us and then we move on to our next retreat. They think something is going to happen, so they gather around us. Me... I think Kirsten has such a magnetic personality that they are just drawn to her. Everywhere we turn, we ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » North Atlantic January 12th 2023

Wednesday 11th January 2023 I have just spent the day writing up our first week and a bit away only to have lost it all! So this is likely to be an abbreviated version. Tuesday 3rd January Thanks to Christopher for coming down with us on Monday to stay overnight in Winchester, so we only had a half hour journey on Tuesday morning. We were at the checkin at the appointed time with what I thought was all the relevant paperwork. Well, most of it was ok, just a small matter of my passport number not having registered for the American ESTA visa. Rogers had been accepted but mine hadn’t. No idea why not. We ended up in a Q with quite a number of other passengers who were also having problems with visa paperwork. Some ... read more

I Sunday, 23 and the seas are calming and the skies blue. My back is improved but still concerning. It will either be healed by the time I get home or....... Yesterday, in that time before getting out of bed, I spotted our little stowaway. I had heard about it at dinner a couple of nights ago. It appears the fluffy little wren or sparrow flew on board in England and then was unable to fly home. That morning it was riding on my deck chair. Wish I had something to feed it but the best I could do was put out half an orange. Two days later it was still untouched. Imagining it making a new home in the USA. A note about the rock band playing in the Rolling Stone Rock Room. They are ... read more

We are now on the high seas. Our two ports in Europe, La Harve in France and Plymouth in England started out rainy but cleared up as the days went on. I had planed to explore Devon and experience Devon High Tea but it was a tender port, the seas were rough and my back is aching. So I bailed. Last night I enjoyed a lovely veal chop and capped the evening off listening to the rock group. I so wanted to get up and dance but sanity prevailed. One brave woman got on the dance floor solo and the lead guitarist joined here for a bit. The seas began to get rougher by bedtime. During the night we were rocking and rolling and today there is rain, thunder and high swells. I am thankful for ... read more

I’m writing this final blog from the airplane home somewhere over the Atlantic. I wanted to take the time on this very long flight to reflect on our latest adventure before the reality of normalcy sets in and it all becomes a happy blur. A few statistics about our adventure. Total miles driven in the car: approximately 2200 Total kilometers walked: 185.4 19 breakfasts with eggs; 12 breakfasts with baked beans Number of castles / palaces visited: 14 Roundabouts navigated: approximately 247 Number of sheep viewed: approximately 2 million We’ve been asked by various cabbies and people we’ve met towards the end of our adventure what we enjoyed the most. As Don has said, that’s a very difficult question to answer as we saw so many different things it’s impossible to really compare. How I’ve decided ... read more

1. - Introduction - Southampton I suspect like many other travellers, 2022 is a year where travel plans cancelled by the pandemic finally come to fruition and this trip to Iceland and Greenland was no exception. This was to be our fourth visit to Iceland (the first being on honeymoon some 40 years ago!), but our first to Greenland and therefore a place on our bucket list to be ticked off. In mid-August, we travelled over to Southampton with a couple of days spare before embarking Island Princess for our voyage north. As most of Europe was experiencing an unusually hot summer, we aimed to keep our outdoor activities in Southampton to a minimum. Our first stop was at the Tudor House, an old merchant house originally built on the dockside but now a fair distance ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Sargasso Sea August 15th 2022

Morning found Carnival Legend at sea. The Sargasso Sea to be exact. That stretch between North America and Bermuda. We played United States Trivia, which we did well at, but did not win. Enjoying our cabin balcony, we watched clumps of sargassum float by, flying fish take to the air and ships pass on the horizon. The evening was Formal Night, or Cruise Elegant as it is now known. Susan and I first took in the evening show, Motor City, and that was enjoyable with its Motown music retrospective. Dinner was Roast Beef. Surprise dining room entertainment appear nightly, with a singing waiter and the entire service staff sometimes oining in. Cruise lines today take two leisurely sea days to reach Bermuda. (In the era of ocean travel, Furness Bermuda Lines ships were intent on getting ... read more

Some Enchanted Evening (mornings and afternoons also included!) aka: how I survived 25 days onboard a Princess cruise ship Saturday morning in Fort Lauderdale dawned bright and clear – an auspicious start (one can only hope) to what will be a lengthy stay onboard the Enchanted – the newest ship in the Princess fleet. Despite having sailed previously with other cruise lines, I faced this upcoming event with some trepidation, based on my experience with the infamous Medallion app. This smartphone app has been the bane of my existence for a couple of weeks prior to departure. It is without a doubt, one of the worst examples of current technology available today – in a word it sucks! Not only does it qualify as an arachnid Motel 6, but I have developed a finger callus from ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic April 11th 2022

Monday, April 11, 2022 At Sea WOW. Once again, another rough night of rocking and rolling. We are at sea all day today, so we gotta grin and bear it. Interesting, when we look out at the seas, they don’t look too menacing, so I have a feeling it has to do with the way we are traversing over the waves – which is really unsettling. Walking is actually hazardous to one’s health. It’s a “nice” day today, but NOT great, a little chilly. We spent the day playing rummykub – Christopher cleaned my clock. It happens, rarely, but it happens. Tonight, we have our third World Club party. It will be interesting to hear this particular cruises’ statistics. The ship has not stopped rolling from side to side ALL day long. During the party, there ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic April 7th 2022

At Sea Today was one of those great days at sea, where one does nothing but relax, unwind, and vegetate. We all need at least one of those days, NO? The seas were calm – one might think Mother Nature and Poseidon FINALLY came to an agreement regarding the weather. Perfect skies. Why is it when we are at sea the clouds feel as though we can reach out and grasp them? Almost, but not quite within our reach; teasing us as they drift slowly by. We spent the entire day up on the pool deck shaded by the deck above us. The people watching is fantastic from here. The men who wander around with too little clothing on – and should be more covered – for a variety of reasons. Women of a certain age ... read more
