Meet the Wild ThangMeet the Wild ThangMeet the Wild Thang

A menacing beast
With your skulls & bling,
You make everything…groovy!

Meet our new (1993) “Suzuki Sidekick” - a belittling model name for a car, I know - but this badass is no shrinking violet. We now cruise the streets of Apia with ferocious looking skulls lining both doors, “Wild Thang” plastered down the sides, and the piece de resistance, a diamante-studded dollar sign on the front grille! It may have a few mechanical woes which had us stranded in the middle of the island on Day 2 of ownership, and be lacking internal door handles so that we have to wind down the windows to let ourselves out, but damn do we look tough as we reach out the window and yell for the mechanic. Well, at least Bernard our trusty nodding dashboard dog thinks so. But then you can always count on him for a nod of approval, as he seems to be in a perpetual state of agreeance.

While it may seem a bit extravagant for volunteers to have a car, it's actually very difficult to get anywhere outside town on buses (NOTHING runs on a Sunday), so it makes the hugest difference to your freedom. What's more, you don’t actually lose any resale value on old beaters here - they seem to hit $3,000-4,000 AUD (drastically overpriced for something of questionable roadworthiness) then bottom out. So providing it doesn’t get taken out in a tropical cyclone (touch wood), we should at least get our money back.

Now we have our ticket out of town and have beautiful beaches and surf spots 30mins from our doorstep, so watch out Samoa! What’s more, we can’t wait to prove the Thang’s worth in the upcoming “Amazing Race: Samoa Style”. This is an event planned by two other volunteer couples with almost identical Suzuki Sidekicks to decide which colour truly is fastest - red, blue or black & white. While we’re relative newcomers to the field, we don’t need a list of 10 bullet points to assist with starting our car, nor can we see the road through rust holes in the floor, so I’d say we’ve got a comparative advantage. So much so, in fact, that the Thang is being referred to as "the posh car" (note: quote accompanied by upturned nose) in the volunteer crowd. But they're just jealous :P

Now I’ve just written all this junk about

cars when I should have been writing about our unscripted, extremely unaffordable and incredibly amazing three-week trip to the UK and France for Julia’s cousin Rachel’s wedding and the Rugby World Cup. All that and more in the next instalment…

Missing you all back home and yay for our first official visitors Hannah and Dave (in early Dec) and Ben and Nomes (over New Year’s)!!!

Ed

Hey guys. gday, ed thanks for the email. Looks like life is treating you guys like a coconut. tough, hairy and well traveled (you Ed!) but the experience inside your world is priceless I am sure. I have been a bit out of the blog-sphere but will make sure to send more info now. I hope Samoa is prooving to be as good a time as Fiji. Julia hopefully your getting some good rugby contacts to make the next world cup but with another team! Let us know how the european travels went. In fact i have to call and say gday. We have skype as well so I will try and call during your work day Ed. Me back in Oz and enjoying no bags lliving on the beach in Manly. We have a nice place by the water that you guys are always welcome to stay at if you are here. Settleing in and realizing that world travel experiences don't always translate to the experiences you know;home. But Erica is enjoying and so am I. Still looking for work in the enviro sphere. Mixing it up with the other graduates for a foot in the door. Something will come of it though. Hoping to see a polynesian pacific sunset soon. all the best guys, love the wild thing. It would go great in Cabrammatta!!!!!!!!! Ed what would be the best way to get a hold of the 7'2? Also I am working in a surf store to pay the bills. Do you need anything for over there? Hope the waves are good. Cheers MArek
