20/3/09 = Big Al...the Fergburger... not the man!
Got up several times in morning, but only briefly and each mini trip ended with me returning to bed. Decided to take the advice that the best cure for a hangover is sleep; we'll see. When did finally open eyes and check watch, it was 11:45. Wow...that might be one of the best sleeps I have ever had in my adult life! Got up feeling not too bad and mainly just hungry. Sleep really is cure. Had fruit and yoghurt for breakfast and ate it v.slowly while watching Along Came Polly. Only put it on as somthing to watch during breakfast, but we ended up watching whole thing. Was nearly 2pm then. Most of day gone. Couldn't sleep in like this all time.
Got changed, then went into town to use internet again. How can I still be so far behind with blog? Spent 2 hours there then went to the famous Fergburger shop; a visit we have been planning for a while. The Fergburger = famous in NZ and only seen 1 shop = Queenstown. Had to try one. They are supposed to be best burgers in world. Will comment
Big Al in all his glory
Disappointed with photo really...doesn't quite convey how big he really was! afterwards. Perused menu and spotted 'Big Al'. Guys sharing room with had told us about Big Al = apparently the biggest burger in world and "no way a girl can eat it all" because they couldn't even eat it all. Well, that only set the challenge. Chalenge enhanced further by American guys got stuck with last night who also said same thing:
"Trust me girls, just get a normal burger to share. Even the normal burgers are to big."
Ha! Debs had faith in me...and I had faith in me. They didn't. "If you finish it all, I'll buy it for you. I'm that confident you won't be able to do it". I knew there was a reason we should have stayed with them last night!
Didn't bother looking at menu. Walked straight up to counter and ordered Big Al = biggest and most expensive...you only live once. Lady at till laughed at me as I ordered it.
"Who are you sharing it with?" she said as she looked around. What is the big deal...it's only a burger.
"No-one...just me. Is it really that big..do I definitely not need chips? Because I was going to order chips". More laughter.
"There's no way you'll finish it...no way. I can't even finish a normal one".
Couldn't believe all the fuss; just give me the burger! Beginning to feel like I needed to provide some kind of CV or certificate to prove I could eat it. I hope I can.
Waited in line for burger for around 15mins and actually got quite nervous. Under a lot of pressure to finish this burger! Managed to squeeze on a seat in preparation for eating, then Debs' came. She returned saying that she thought she had seen mine nearly ready. In fact, her actual comment was "This is going to be funny". Walked to counter to collect mine and lady actually wished me good luck as she handed it over. Was worse than when I did bungy! Got to admit though, did look big and when took it off her, it was definitely the heaviest burger ever held in life..by far the heaviest. Got back to table and unwrapped it; even I was shocked. It was huge. Simply huge. Not a normal burger....even the beanstalk giant would think this burger was big. Never, ever seen any burger even close to being as big as
this one. Was wider than the size of my head and trying to pick it up was a physical nightmare. Couldn't fit hands around it. Had:
#2 beef burgers
#2 eggs
#2 servings of bacon
#2 servings of cheese
#salad across 3 layers
# a variety of sauces I could neither distinguish nor describe.
Took a bit of fumbling, but did eventually manage to pick it up. Next problem...how can I fit my mouth around this thing? I couldn't. It was far, far too tal for a regular human beings mouth, so I did the only thing I could; bit out of the top layer, then the middle, then the bottom. He was tasty, really tasty; probably one of the best tasting burgers ever eaten. Really enjoyed eating it, until I got around half way through. Oh no...stalling. Looked down at poor belly that was straining under pressure, but wasn't about to give up. Have made it through this pain barrier plenty of times before and can do it again. Carried on munching him down section by section, enjoying him a little less with each bite. 15mins passed and was still persevering. It was the never-ending burger; no matter
The end...
Just a few scraps of salad where Al once lay. how much I ate, it just didn't seem to go down.
Got to the last 1/4 and was well and truly full to the point of bursting out of my little shorts. Had to put him down and re-assess situation. Challenged by a lot of people to eat this burger and I wasn't going to be defeated by last 1/4. Eating is who I am...if can't finish this, then who am I? That was it...it was a matter of character. I was going to eat that burger even if I had to get air-lifted out of that shop! Picked it back up and carried on with the new determination of an champion athelete competing for gold. You're going down Big Al!
Forced him in, section by section, belly expanding like a false pregnancy. It wasn't pretty and I didn't appreciate the people taking photos...yes, there were people taking photos. 5mins later... I was victorious, Big Al was defeated. All that remained of the famous Big Al were a few scraps of lettuce that lay in his resting place. Well done Big Al, you gave it your best...it was a valliant effort, and we both came away with scars.
My belly was probably one of biggest I have ever seen it. Have eaten through some food in my time, but that was one of the hardest challenges. Waddled off to toilet to wash my hands and face. I literaly did waddle. Then I waddled off into street to go to information centre. Debs was really full from her normal burger too.
Had a slow walk around town, then an even slower walk back to hostel. Lots of hard work taking place in belly at this time. Wrote a few postcards, gave belly a chance to settle, then 2 hours later, when could walk properly again, headed into town for internet. Still v.full and belly still protruding, but could at least walk and breathe normally now. Used internet for a few hours, then back to hostel and wrote diary for a while. Guys sharing room didn't really believe I had finished burger, despite photos, but I knew truth = all that matters. At 11pm, went to sleep still full, but totally happy and self affirmed.
