Adelaide Coast
Day out with Sally Hey guys.....
we thought it wa about time that we updated you on the last leg of our Oz Experience - can't quite believe it's now all over!
In Adelaide we were lucky enough to stay firstly with Hamish's (gappie) parents John and Sally and then the remainder if our time with the Noske's (anpther gappie). We were looked after extremely well and are very grateful to them for putting up with us travellers!!! During our time in this city we had a days excursion to the coast with Sally as a brilliant guide - we visted numerous pretty beaches and ports, ate the best pies in Sounth Australia and had our first experience of wine tasting - very sophisticated!!! When at Bens we had a scrummy BBQ while watching Ozzie rules football on Anzac Day (a day in which they remember all those that have died in war - equivalent to Rememberance Sunday in the UK); had an extremely fun night out at the cheesiest club in town (Flash Dance!); and did some more tasting, this time cheese (exculding Sarah of course!) and chocolate. On our last night in Adelaide we met up with Henry (yet another gappie!!!) for
Flash Dance
Night out with Ben and friends a few drinks to catch up. All in all we had a great time in this city.
From here we started the Great Ocean Road Tour. This was a 2 night/3day tour taking us to Melborne. Unfortunately the heavens decided to open for the first time in months ending the S.Aussi drought on our first day. This ment that some of the orgaised walks we were supposed to do in the Grampians National Park had to be cancelled - instead we did a few smaller walks, for example to the magnificent Mckenzie Falls, and we didn't let the miserable weather get us down!
The second day was a little more eventful due to the kinder weather. We made it to the Great Ocean Road and we got to see this beautiful coastline in all its glory. The amazing rock formations that we got to see were the Bay of Islands, 12 Appostles and London Bridge. The day was ended by a group bonding session playing card drinking games in our very quaint hostel.
The last day showed us more pretty bays and features along the coast as well as doing a very impressive Otway Raintop Walk - a walkway 25
- 42m above the rainforest floor. We arrived in Melborne at around 6.30pm and made our way to Hamish's flat and after a pretty tiresome day on the Great Ocean Road we were happy to have a few relaxed drinks on his patio and a tasty thai dinner. A great way to catch up with an old friend.
We couldn't let our visit to Melborne pass us by without a visit to Pin Oak Court (aka Ramsey Street) the home of the famous Australian soap-Neighbours. So on our second day we took ourselves off to the street making use of the Melborne tram system to get us there. Our timing was perfect! We arrived at the street at the same time as an organised Neighbours tour so were able to meet one of the cast Conner and get in on the question and answer session. After a tour of the street and many photos later we headed back to Melborne city centre.
The Neighbours theme carried into the evening as we headed down to the Elephant and Wheelbarrow, the local pub renowned for holding the Neighbbours Night. Over the corse of the evening we joined in on a trivia quiz
and met a number of other cast members including Libby Kennedy, Karl Kennedy and Dylan Timmins. The night ended on a high watching Karl and his band playing on front stage.
Our final evening in Melborne was spent with Hamish's flat mate Jules who took us to a favourite restaurant of hers in China Town where we sat and spent the evening telling travelling tales.
Late Wednesday morning we said our goodbyes to Melborne and flew up north to Brisbane, our final stop in Australia. We were all really excited to land in Brissy late afternoon as we were being met at the airport by Nicki, a friend from India who had offered to have us to stay for our last few days.
An early start on Thursday took us to the Australian Zoo - the home of Steve Irwin. Originally a reptile farm started by Steve's father yet today the zoo spans over 700 acres. The majority of the day was spent viewing the wildlife that the zoo had to offer. The show held in the 'Crocassium' was the most enjoyable part of the day for us three girls especially seeing a croc feed.
This evening we hit Fridays
The Group
In front of London Bridge with Nicki. A popular open-air bar overlooking the impressive Brisbane city bridge. While sitting having drinks on the bar terrace we were approached by a pair of journalists working for Ralf magazine (Aussis equivalent of FHM!) who asked us to answer a few questions and took a few photos for the nights out section in the magazine! This generated a number of laughs amongst us girls and made the night definately one to remember.
Our final day in Australia was spent out of the city in the Blackall Ranges. Nicki was our chauffeur for the day driving us to the rural area of Maleney where we stopped at a German restaurant to have morning tea - apple strudel and coffee. From here we went to the village of Montville where we looked around the local shops and had lunch on the village green. The beautiful weather and stunning scenery of the Blackhall Ranges made for a perfect last day in Oz.
Knowing we had an early flight out of Oz the next day a girlie night in had been planned by Nicki. Chocolate, wine and face masks were on the menu. An evening of pampering was exactly what we needed
before starting our more basic life in a campervan travelling New Zealand.
