Queen Charlotte Track
QC Track - Punga Ferns2/14/12
Energized with scrambled eggs and bacon our group, the now ‘Famous Five’ trekers hit the ‘road’ heading south west toward Punga Lodge,
Endeavour Inlet. To-day is Valentine’s Day and romance may bloom along the trail. Rain has been predicted but luckily the forecasters turned out to be ‘misinformed’. Bravo !!!!

Along this next sector of trail … 12km … the dominant feature is the
New Zealand PUNGA …. This ubiquitious fern thrives in this sub-tropical climate and is seductively picturesque (see Big John’s pics).
Topography is undulating and we are grasping for descriptive superlatives to do justice to the stunning sea views as we trail blaze.
Azure is a colour that comes to mind as we view the ocean inlets …
It is beautiful.
The bird life is less abundant today, however, when we stop for lunch, virtually from ‘nowhere’ a family of weka birds ‘appear’ to scavenge for our food.
To day was a short trek, just 12kms, however, the final 2 kms was
akin to an ascent of
Mt Everest. Our ‘shins were barking’ (aching) as we
opened the door to our Lodge (No. 11) at Punga Cove, but the reward was a magnificent panorama of pristine native forest framed by our azure sea. The ‘girls’ and ‘boys’ indulged in blue cod for dinner, Mr Ambassador ordered the New Zealand lamb … yummy.
