Enchilada dinner
Sandra the master cheif taking our gormet enchildas out of the oven This weekend we decided to take Lola for her maiden voyage on a road trip to the west coast to Hokitika for the WildFoods Festival. Supposedly it is one of the top 100's New Zealand must do's. The night before we had our first weekly gormet dinner and Sandra and I made enchiladas and we had coronas and christened our new Corona before the big trip. We left on Thursday afternoon after stopping by a BBQ at the flat next door, and we drove up to Christchurch where we spent the night with one of Sara's friends from Colgate who is studying at Canterburry. Her flat was so nice, appartment style and it put the places here to shame but the university is outside the center of the city and although we didn't get to see much of the campus or the city, from first impression I am so glad that I am in Dunedin. Friday morning we drove the second half of the eight hours and drove through Arthur's pass which was beautiful. We were going to stop at a waterfall there but missed the turn off so once we got to Hokitika we drove a little bit outside of
town to a different waterfall and lake. Then we drove back into town and set up our tent on the field behind the high school. There are about 17,000 people that come to this festival each year and most of the people camp out at the local schools or in designated beach areas (which unfortunately were full by the time we got there). We wandered around town for a while and looked at the arts and crafts part of the festival- I got a really pretty summery wrap around dress. When we got back to our camp a bunch of people that we knew were there and that night we all hung out and had a fire on the beach.
In the morning we woke up and went to the beach again. I just relaxed and went swimming later in the day and after we headed to the food festival!!!!!
First thing we headed to the HuHu Grub tent where there were a bunch of people choping wood looking for the small little worms that they were selling. I just went for it and bought the first round of grubs- $2 each. They were about 1.5 inches long, white with
Arthur's pass
going to the bathroom on the side of the road- what a sweet view black heads. They squirm in your hand and I pretty much we so grossed out but we all just threw them in our mouths at the same time and I took one bite, gaged and then swallowed. I had heard they tasted like peanut butter, but I thought it tasted like nasty mashed potatoes. Once that was out of the way we went to look for more gross food. Other stuff I tried included crocodile, kangaroo, venison, lamb liver, rabbit pie and possom pie. For being a really picky eater that stuff wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, most of it just tasted like normal chicken or beef. There was also giant fish eyes, cow testicles, cow tittie, chocolate covered worms, crickets, worm sushi and much more that I didnt taste. there was also good stuff too though. We had yummy sea food chowder, chicken in nan and snowflake ice cream. We stayed till the very end of the festival so we got a lot of free food so that was nice because most of the stuff was expensive. I was so fun just to walk around though and see all the random people- a bunch of
people were dressed up in crazy outfit and there were bands playing. Once it was over we went back to our campsite and hung out for a bit and then partied on the beach again that night. Pretty much all the Americans we have met so far in Dunedin were there and there were a ton of other people on the beach building fires.
In the morning it was rough getting up and my stomach pretty much hated me because I at so much but me decided to drive down the west coast which is supposedly the most beautful drive of the south island- I slept for a lot of the way though unfortunately. But we did drive by both Fox and Fraz Joseph glaciers which were amazing and we are definitely going back to hike. After a long 9 hour drive from the sunny west coast we were home sweet home in overcast Dunedin.
