So I wake up occasionally to the sound of rain on the camper and do pray that hopefully it will stop and continue to hope even on the drive to the port and as we walk through the rain to the terminal and even as we run onto the boat and even as we drink the complimentary coffee to warm ourselves up...oh well we resign ourselves to a rainy day on Milford Sound.
Our Mitre Peak Cruise
So we chose Mitre Peak because we had read reviews that it was a nicer small boat to the popular Real Journey's option and it truly was tiny in comparison to the big Real Journey's boat beside us. Our crew were very very friendly throughout and the Captain often wondered around the boat to chat with everyone. I was very pleased when he assured us not to worry about the rain that it would still be a beautiful day out on the boat...if you say so! Most of the time on the boat cruise is spent walking about taking hundreds of pictures. Hubby had the camera as well and you might be surprised to hear this but he is actually worse than
me with the amount of pictures that he takes. We even managed to make our way onto the top deck to enjoy the views but were very glad that we had wrapped up warm. The smaller boat can get really close to the waterfalls and I even decided once to go to the front of the boat to get wet by the spray...which by the way was freezing! Of course with all the rain there was plenty of waterfalls to enjoy. It really was magical and romantic. Our only disappointment was not seeing any dolphins but we certainly had already managed to cross most wildlife of our list so we could not complain.
It is here of course that we nearly but at the time we thought we had lost all the pictures we had taken as hubby showed me that horrible message of CF card error! You try to go oh well we still have great memories we can still enjoy the rest of our holiday but seriously we were both close to tears. Thankfully it was near the end of the boat cruise so it did not spoil our experience of that.
It is crazy but
seriously as we drove the 2 hour drive back to Te Anau the weather improved dramatically...go figure. Our first stop in Te Anau was to a photo store to fix our problem. It was really to buy a new CF card for the hundreds more pictures we were determined to take but we actually ended up speaking to the guy in the shop who THANK YOU LORD fixed our problem by retrieving our photos for us and saving them to CD. It only made the sign outside his shop ring true...Are your photos safe? Hubby figured we could have probably done it ourselves but I can only imagine the stress of it and of course it would have hung over the rest of the holiday.
We decided that since we enjoyed Milford Sound so much and we had the time we would do Doubtful Sound Cruise as well as it takes the whole day. So we rested in Te Anau and looked forward to our day tomorrow and maybe this time the weather would not be too bad. Te Anau is a lovely town by the lake and if we had more time we would have stayed longer to do more walks and really enjoy the area.
