Lake Te Anau is the second largest in New Zealand, however the weather quickly turned from being close to 30C to around 20C with a good wind the next day. We used our time in Te Anau to do some walking and just relax. Dunedin has a Scottish heritage and happens to be the oldest city in New Zealand. In our entire New Zealand journey I guess that the odds are that you will have at least one bad hotel; ours was in Dunedin the Mercure. One result of having a bad hotel is that you do want to spend as little time as possible at the hotel. The result was that we walked the city enjoyed several restaurants and took Taieri Gorge Railway. Construction commenced in 1879. The railway runs along the Taieri Gorge with 12 tunnels and a number of bridges over some very steep plunging rock faces.
