March 6-
I arrived at 6am after the 13 hour flight, feeling good. My muscle relaxant worked and the neck pillow was crucial to my 6 hours of sleep! I drove to downtown New Zealand. The airport is nice, and customs was suprisingly efficient, cordial, intuitive and easy. First was the passport stamper, the then drug sinffing beagle and friendly kiwi handlers, and then the agricultural inspections. I felt a bit like I was going through a museum to different exhibits with friendly curators, explaining to me what I was seeing. I got my rental car keys, bought postcards and a driving atlas and some water. I brushed my teeth and 2 others were cleaning up as well. I wasn't in any hurry to start driving on the wrong side of the road at 630am, stiff and on vacation. I needed to slow down, which was weird because I was in an airport and an airport isn't usually the type of place that you would want to linger. It all looks so beautiful, I already set one of them as my desktop background...did you take pictures of the big cities? I'd like to have an idea of how the urban NZ looks like...
The pictures are great and the trevel log is free publicity for the toruist board.
Youve taken some awesome pics of nz, I think the whangarei pics are great! New Zealand is a great place to visit, and glad you visited my home town of whangarei.
Great photos of my favourite dive spot! the Poor Knights is one of the best dive spots in the world and you have captured the character of the place so brilliantly. Pity the light was not better on the day as words cant describe the beauty that abounds here.
Thanks Stephen for these magic photos.

Poor Knights IslandsThe light was very low for pictures. For the eyes, it was a visual feast! As many fish in Puerto Rico, but lots more eels. There were also thousands of harmless "Comb Jellyfish" near the surface.

Plantation Forest After HarvestTree Plantations are everywhere. In the Late 70's after dimishing returns, New Zealand adopted a strictly sustainable forest industry.
Forest PlantationThese forests are also designated scenic reserves, and for good reason! Natives work their way in, and tree ferns are left standing after harvest.
Forest PlantationTo Pinus radiata, the moist climate and clean air of New Zealand feel better than home sweet home back in California!
Forest PlantationPine plantations are also common in Chile, some are tens of miles wide. It tends to make these places feel familiar, almost like being home.
Forest PlantationOne only has to look at the moon to discover you aren't home in California- The moon is upside down!
CowsCows next to some native conifer trees, it looks like a Rimu? I dont know what he was looking at...
OtoroHangaMorning Mist over the Farms before the cave trip.
