Waipoua kauri forest
Me in front of the 'Four Sisters' Waipoua
The day after our walk around Trounson, it rained and rained, but we put on our rain macs and walked around Waipoua forest where the real monster kauris grow. We saw the largest kauri, Tane Mahuta, and the second largest, Matua Nghare. They were breath-taking and so majestic. As we turned a corner on the forest path and saw Matua Nghare in a small clearing, we both caught our breath. This was the first of the giant kauris we had seen and, if it hadn't split and broken part-way up the trunk, it would be the largest kauri. Its girth is bigger than Tane Mahuta. This was our favourite kauri. We also saw the Four Sisters, four large kauris growing very closely together. The forest was just incredible to walk through, even more so in the rain as it seemed even greener and smelt lovely.
