Woke to clear blue sky and set off on the 4.5 hr drive to Wellington. Before we got properly going we popped by the tokaanu thermal park where we saw natural steaming water pools and bubbling mud baths. Cool but stinky. En-route we stopped off at a café which had an old prop plane parked up next to it – a few years ago you could have drinks and food in the plane, but sadly no longer. When we arrived in Wellington we went straight to the Weta Cave, where you can view the mini museum and shop for the film effects company behind Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Tin-Tin etc… Small but fantastic place. We saw a film on their history and then spent a while looking at all the cool ‘toys’. In particular I was found lingering next to the wall of rayguns, designed by Dr Grordbort (aka. One of the weta designers). I couldn’t leave without one, and ended up with the ‘Righteous Bison Indivisible particle smasher’ raygun…..I think I look rather dashing with it. P
