We drove into Lake Taupo in much need of some relaxation as well as desperate to do some laundry. We solved both of these mini problems (let’s face it when you are out seeing the world these problems are certainly not major) by checking ourselves into the De Bretts Resort. On the eastern side of the volcanic area, is this desert area. I assume its there because of the volcanic dust that been blown by the wind. The State Highway 1 runs this side of the Tongariro NP, and closes if theres any eruption.(Only from the active Mt.Ruapehu, snow covered and south of Mt.Ngauruhoe).

See the people walking over the ridge. The other side is a worrying descent on large loose, dusty rocks, not fun! Has some curiously sand dust in it. Don't know how it got its name though?

From the worrying loose slope down from the Red Crater. I, holding my camera and tripod, fell over many times. Crazy french people were running passed me to get to the bottom. One kid was running right next to the edge. I swear he was gonna take Laura out and both would plunge to their ends in the Red Crater. Anyway beautiful lakes.

Looking a bit dull. This is the point where you leave the craters behind and head over the crest and descend to our pick up point. Only another 4hours to go!!! Oh, and thats Laura heading back triumphantly after cunningly taking a wee under a large rock.
