Pukeko
We woke up to the sound of Pukekos. They were busy running all around the camp grounds. The campground had its own boiling mud pools, and it had hot mineral pools. The river running alongside it had steam coming from it too. You could see steam coming from people’s yards that backed onto the camp ground as well. Imagine having your own natural hot pool in your back yard! Elizabeth, Samuel and I all made sure we enjoyed the luxury of soaking in the camp’s hot mineral pools before check out time!

The day turned out to be hot and sunny. We went and did the walking track to Okere Falls. We saw some people doing rafting down the river and over the falls. It was fun to watch them. After Okere Falls, we went to Kerosene Creek. This is not a highly publicized tourist spot. It is a naturally heated creek that runs through forest, and it has a mild kerosene smell to it. It was like being in a free spa! The water temperature was perfect, and we were surrounded by forest. If you got under the waterfall, it felt like a massage. We stayed and enjoyed this

hidden gem until our skin was wrinkled like prunes!

We are now at the Waikite Valley Camp Grounds, where they have their own thermal pools. The camp grounds are very basic, with the exception of the thermal pools. It is off the beaten track so you are surrounded by farmland and forest. Neil and I enjoyed a beer outside, listening to the sheep baaing in the background. E & S are currently enjoying the pools. It seems like they can never have too much time in water! I will go and join them soon so I can relax in the natural geothermal water.
