Today was blissfully warm and sunny. After breakfast we got ourselves organised and got on to the complimentary shuttle into town. We had been prepared for a half hour walk to the national aquarium but the shuttle delivered us to the door. After looking at all of the critters we went and had a lovely coffee. Gosh I miss the coffee - it’s so hit and miss on the ship.
Our bus driver was telling us that the short wall along the roadway was built to stop the tide from flooding their streets - but the beach is like 15 metres away. In 1931 they had an earthquake and this part of the land was raised up, making the sea wall redundant. About 250 people died and now they’ve made a memorial garden for them on the new ground they gained. They also had an oceanarium with dolphins until people became concerned for their welfare, so they emptied it out and transformed the pools into a skate park. They have a road safety park for little children to teach them rules of the road before they start riding on it.
When they rebuilt the town after the earthquake they built it
with an Art Deco theme - so many of the buildings are Art Deco, and there’s even a tour company with old 1930s cars, beautifully restored, driving people around the town. It’s a lovely town.
When we finished in the aquarium we caught the shuttle back to the museum to have a look around, and then back to the ship by 2pm for an early departure.
After lunch (alas, they have run out of Shiraz) and a small rest we went down to computer centre to have my device problems looked at. Ever since the company changed internet providers at lunchtime yesterday my iMessages agent worked, and neither has my airdropping of pics from m iPhone to my iPad. So these blogs haven’t got very good pics for yesterday and today. After being in line for half an hour the little man fixed up my iMessages, but he’s going to research how to fix the airdropping and fix that tomorrow, I hope. It costs a fortune to have two devices per person on the internet, so I only have the iPad on it.
By then we decided to sit in a quiet lounge and do a spot of
reading. There were no quiet lounges to be found, but we did find a lounge with a marvellous violinist performing wonderful classical pieces, so we got Tom a Singapore Sling (hello Shannon) and I had a lovely martini.
When it was time we went off for dinner - and tonight we both had lobster ravioli as a starter, then I had a wonderful dish of veal wrapped in filo pastry, and Tom had roasted duck breast. Tom’s dessert was Lava Cake with 2 scoops of rum and raisin ice cream, while I had Creme brûlée. We were joined by the lovely Phoenix/Wyoming couple at the table next to us.
No show for us tonight - we‘re not used to going out so often and we’re finding it a little tiring so we’re just going to stay in and watch that movie “The Fall”. There are only two more days of exploring then a couple of sea days before home.
