Waiheke Island at the end of the season

We decided at the last minute to go to Waiheke. We headed for Auckland after dropping Erin off at the Hamilton airport heading back to Wellington. On the highway we decided to check out Waiheke Island off the east coast of Auckland - which turned out to be just like Saltspring Island off the Canadian West Coast. I am doing a few weeks of voluntary work at an environmental learning centre in Central America. For gardening and teaching some local women some felting and other textile crafts, and to update the centre's website. It is a very interesting place, and the programmes are quite impressive. There are 8 volunteers here I think, two of us are twenty nine, and the rest are in their early to mid 20s. I took a walk along Onetnagi Beach

and followed a route detailed in a pamphlet listing walkways around the island

If the last one wasn't close enough

here is a closer view of another one. I hope you readers appreciate what I am willing to do for the sake of your interest. Imagine how close I had to hunch over to get this. Blech. The stupid thing is pulsating too.

How could you just pass by

and NOT take a picture of this rock??? Just sitting outside someone's fence on the beach road.

Baby Blue Penguin

There were four of these, spaced far apart on the long beach. This is as close as we got to penguins on this trip.

In a seaside garden

If you look closely you can see the paua shells stuck in various places.

Pat loves his acre of coffee

Actually this is his last Flat White in New Zealand, perhaps. And - guess where? McCafe of course! Yes, quiche and capuccino at McDonald's. Stopped for brunch after crossing on the ferry in the pouring rain Sunday morning.

My solution to remembering

where to put the thingy for the four wheel drive to work, after Pat goes back to Canada and leaves me with the car.

Dropping Pat off at Auckland Airport

On April 5th. We came early so my return trip would not be complicated by rush hour traffic at night. No longer on daylight savings, it was getting dark around 6 pm.
