celebrating Australia Day in style!
We are on the road at last! Said our farewells to Perth, after celebrating Australia Day with the family down at the Riverside at Skyworks fireworks and air show - amazing to see how much Australians celebrate their national day!!Everyone wears the flag, drapes it on their car or waves it from everywhere they can!!
On Friday 1st Feb, we headed off from Perth, after spending a week at the caravan park around the road from Geoff and Carole's home in Forrestfield ( alovely camp by the way). We were pleased we did a trial run before heading off, as we had a few problems with the caravan (short in the wiring for the water pump and heater, annexe poles too long...) and were able to get the caravan dealer to sort these out, get the car ready for the road and find out what we were missing in the way of equipment etc. It is actually quite a lot of work to get everything ready for a big trip, esp. when you are not at home base! Blu had a 4 wheel driving lesson from Glen and Kim put a CB radio in for us and everyone was very helpful

from Riverside Drive, Perth
- thanks folks!
Headed out to Wave Rock on Day 1, via Northam (Blu's Dad was born there) and Quaradining, staying at the Wave Rock camping area overnight. Wave Rock is an interesting rock formation (see photo) about 15 metres high. Next day we headed up to Kalgoorlie, a hot humid day but relieved by a cold beer at Southern Cross closely followed by thunderstorm, forked lightning and torrential downpours!
Today was a nice warm day with a breeze, we had a very leisurely potter around Kalgoorlie and saw the "Superpit", the largest open cast goldmine in the Southern Hemisphere - and it was BIG! About 3.8 km by 1.35 wide by 0.5 km deep! If you look carefully you might see some trucks climbing the slopes of the mine in the photo!

Will be spending a couple more days here looking around before heading off to cross the Nullarbor!
