We have arrived in the Pilbara
40 Mile Beach

19th May

We stopped here for a few nights on our way north to Karratha. Located about 70klm south of Karratha the 40 Mile Beach bush camp is a great location to while away the hours or days for anyone seeking a natural ‘bush’ camping coastal campsite. The bay offers quality fishing, apparently, but also protection from most prevailing weather (read winds!) for the beach goer. The number of people here set up for staying in excess of 4 to 5 months just to fish, I guess in some way this testifies to the fact that there must be fish out there amongst all that water! I went fishing here (with soft plastic lures) and made a friend with a squid who for half an hour played fetch with my lure. As I would reel it in he would swim alongside it and stop at the base of the rock I was standing on and look up to await my next cast which he would then turn and go out some 10 metres and wait for before chasing it back in again, bizarre, but a fact, as Trish came and watched these peculiar antics also. The Pilbara, the colours were unbelievable
was like having a dog play fetch in the ocean!

There was also wildlife here! On arrival we pulled up at the caretaker’s caravan to pay our camp fees ($7/night) to be told that the caretaker had been taken to Karratha that morning after stepping on a Brown Snake and being bitten in the annex of his van. Great says Trish! We are then told he had been airlifted by the Royal Flying Doctor to Perth as his blood had started to clot. Do I want to stay here says Trish! We did stay and had a great time here, in fact extending our stay. We did meet Leon, (caretaker), as he returned from Perth the day we left and promptly organised a snake hunt, but to no avail, he had long gone (to bite someone else!).

40 Mile Beach campsite is a great low cost beachside camping ground. I imagine, as with most spots along this west coast, that if it was windy it could be exposed, but for all the rest of the time, and in particular if you are a fisho, it was a great spot to stop.

First it's not safe in the water...and now land!
SNAKES! What's next? You can't go in the water for fear of running into a shark, crocodile or a swarm of stingers and now you can't even step out of your caravan for snakes! Make sure you keep little miss Jackie on a short lead!

Amazing red colours
The red sand really is a beautiful colour and it has only just started for you here! Looking forward to seeing many many more beautiful shots as you drive across the top.
