Drove from Margaret River to Pemberton which was 140 Km and took 2 hours. Roads were straight and lined with Karri Trees which were 90 metres tall. Again saw more Kangaros in the fields. Finally arrived at Karri Valley with help of our Sat Nav called 'Doris'. We drove along a track to a cabin deep in the woods. Spoke to the owner who said we were in the wrong location, he said just drive back through the trees and turn left. Well after several attempts at exiting the trees we found our way back to the road and on to our real destination. We had a wooden shed on stilts on the side of lake. It resembled hi-de hi style chalet with a view across the lake. We decided to go for a walk but turned back when we read the sign "snakes seen in this area" and we were wearing flip flops. Didn't tell you what snakes were seen or when. As we had eaten spicy food we wanted something plain and simple. We drove to a small town called Pemberton and bought some cooked chicken and salad. Delicious!!! This chicken and salad would last a couple of days so we put it in fridge so I turned up the fridge control to colder as we were in temps of 35 degrees. Thought this was a good idea until we wanted our meal on the second day. Well everything in the fridge was frozen solid. So we had to drive back to shops (20km ) and buy some ham and rols. Pemberton (size of Garston parade shops) and their sports hall was being used to accommodate the locals who had to leave their home due to bush fires. We could smell the fire and our car was covered with a thin layer of ash. The local radio broadcast bush fire news every 30 mins so we were tuned into what was happening no more that 50 km away. Local fire crews were using Pemberton to refuel their trucks. Fran spoke to a local fireman who said Karri Valley location was safe as the ground was moist. However we were hearing of locations not a million miles from Pemberton that were at risk. The local fire crew was staying at our resort to wash their clothes and have a meal after their 12 hour shift. On the second day local Police had closed the road from Pemberton to Northcliff because the fire had spread and was out of control. Pemberton at this point was a ghost town as people were out helping their neighbours and others to fight the fires. It was a real eye opener
To see and hear how they dealt with this massive bush fire, bush fire has a perimeter of 270 km and flames 25 metres tall. The next day we were travelling to Albany.
