I've always heard good things about Lorne. One is that it is perfect for summer thanks to its exquisite beaches. Not only that, though. I heard about the endless cultural attractions that you can visit. Well, I can tell you for free that this is all true. Think magical sunsets, long beach walks and laughing koalas. My husband and I finally planned a trip to Lorne, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The three days that we set aside for the trip allowed us to explore this natural beauty, but I wish we had more time. Here's Lorne through my eyes.
First Day - Settling In
The resort town of Lorne is about two hours by road from Melbourne. We drove a rental here, but you can take a public coach, especially if you are from around VIC. Lorne is a stunning blend of leafy forests and sandy beaches, so the views as you drive there are gorgeous. You can stop for a photo if you spot particularly exceptional scenery.
We had already booked a farm stay, so when we arrived, everything was ready. I was feeling a bit tired, so I insisted we rest for a bit although
my husband wanted to begin the sightseeing right away. After a two-hour nap, I was feeling relaxed and hungry. We set out to find somewhere nice for lunch. Lorne doesn't disappoint when it comes to cuisine. We found several decent eateries that weren't pricey. The main street of Lorne has a few places that serve traditional Australian cuisine. Several seaside spots serve fresh seafood. We had a mouth-watering meal of Malaysian seafood Laksa.
Our first attraction to visit was the
Koala Walk in Kennett River. I've always wondered how it feels to hug a koala, and this was my chance. Kennett River is a small town surrounded by a dense eucalyptus forest. It is the natural habitat for various koala communities. Hundreds of koalas call this place home, therefore, you can be sure to spot a few. We were here for about twenty minutes when we saw the first two. The cuteness of these little creatures is hard to resist as you can tell from my photos. Walking along the Grey River Road, which goes up the hill, gives you a better opportunity to see some koalas. Kangaroos are also present here, although not as many as in other parts.
I got to play with one and what I can say is - you had to be there. By the end of the day, we were ready to tuck in our bed at the Great Ocean Road Cottages. I have it booked a few weeks in advance
from the Accommodation in Lorne website. I’m happy I did that because by booking in advance I got the best deal!
Second Day - Basking in the Beauty of Lorne
We started early on day 2 because we wanted to see as much of Lorne as we could. The 12 Apostles was one attraction we had to visit. The limestone rock stacks in Port Campbell National Park are a wonder. For lunch, we popped into one of the yacht clubs in town. Besides a good meal, you can engage in various activities at a yacht club like fishing, boating and sailing. You can sit and watch people while you interact with other guests.
You have to see the sunset from a Lorne beach to appreciate the beauty of the experience. We found our way to the beach and spent a little while enjoying the magnificent views. The
air is nice, and the water always looks inviting. I understood why Lorne is full of surfers. They get good tides to enjoy, and the panorama is even better. The Mr enjoyed dipping his feet in the sand and just laying on the shore taking it all in.
Third Day - The Final Lap
The few hours we had on our last day was reserved for
Erskine Falls, which are the highlight of Lorne tourism.
The distance you have to travel to get to Erskine Falls depends on your accommodation in Lorne. It can take about 10 to 20 minutes. Lush rainforest covers this area, which makes for picturesque scenery. The falls are 30 m, and you can see them from a viewing point above. We wanted an authentic experience and walked to the base through a steep flight of 240 steps. The sights from the lower viewing point are breathtaking. You can hear the sound of the water as it cascades into a gulley.
Lorne is a treasure trove that I would recommend that you spare enough time to explore.
