View from Mount Wellngton, Hobart
We arrived in Hobart "City of Sails" on a rainy, cool and cloudy day.

Our appartment just outside the centre of Hobart was modern and comfortable.

We had a great visit to the old penal settlement at Port Arthur. It was very interesting to hear about the convict life and how the colony established itself.

The short boat trip to the "Isle of the Dead" was very interesting and we heard many stories about the people who had their final resting place on the island.

Bush fires had destroyed many of the houses in the villages en route to Port Arthur. It It was sad to see that 2 brick chimneys were the only remaining evidence of a property, with the original timber structure completely destroyed.

The Saturday market in Hobart, Salamanca Street was lively and there were many stalls with arts, crafts, food and other interesting products.

After the market we had a drive up Mount Wellington for a superb panoramic view of Hobart and surrounding area. The sun came out but it was 10c cooler than in Hobart city centre, on the top of the mountain which is 1200m high and it was

also very windy.

Our drive along the East coast from Hobart was one to remember. There was awesome scenery just like the Great Ocean Road in South Australia. We stopped off to do some walking in Freycinet National Park. We walked to the lookout point over Wineglass Bay and later did the short walk to the Tourville lighthouse. We stayed in Bicheno for 2 nights and saw a few penguins coming back to their nests at dusk after a days fishing.

The scenery along the route from Bicheno to Binalong Beach and the Bay of Fires was stunning. On a lovely sunny day we saw blue skies, super beaches - almost deserted and several pelicans.

We returned to Hobart via the "Heritage Trail" passing through Campbell town where we saw the historic brick arch bridge built by convicts and then Richmond a picturesque village near Hobart.
