St Mary's - Mount Elephant Pancakes
Met some lovely people at Bicheno and spent a couple of days with them at Cosy Camp North in Binnalong Bay. Anne, Bob from Harvey Bay, Dorothy and John from Sydney A spectacular coast line from Buckland in the South to Bicheno in the North taking in Maria Island, the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay. Sandy white secluded beaches perfect for kayaking, snorkeling and beautiful walks. Further up the coast Rd we found some great free camping spots at Chain Of Lagoons North of Bicheno and just out of St Helens called Cosy Camp North at Binnalong Bay. Had the best breakfast pancakes at the famous Mount Elephant Pancakes Restaurant, Quentin had Cheese, Bacon and Egg and I had Camembert Cheese, Chicken and fresh Blueberries......very decadent. Along with great camping spots and campfires, we purchased fresh local fish from St Helens off the locals. From St Helens we travelled along the Tasman Hwy driving through picturesque country side full rolling hills lined with dairy cattle. OUr favourite spots were Goulds Country, Lottah, Derby and Branxholm. When we arrived at Scottsdale we took the road North to Bridport another favourite coastal town, YES we have a few favourites in Tasmania! From here we travelled to the Tamar Valley which included George Town, where we camped under the Batman Bridge, this was also a great location for collecting green lipped oysters when the tide
St Mary
Dont you love this sign!!! Mount Elephant Pancakes 8km south of St Mary's overlooking beautiful scenery. This is a must if you are in Tasmania, there is also another located in Launceston. subsided, then to Beaconsfield where gold miners, Todd Russell and Brant Webb were trapped underground for 14 days in 2006, amazing how they survived and sad they lost their colleague, Larry Knight, what a poignant moment in history for this town. We were now running out of time as our 5 weeks of Tasmania was now drawing to a close and we had to be in devonport by the 25th of April, we drove through Launceston and took the Bass Hwy to Deloraine, another free camping spot overnight, next to an old racecourse and tennis club. From Deloraine we took the Bass Hwy up to Devonport on the way stopping at the famous Raspberry Farm where we sat next to an open fire with a pot of tea, scones, home made raspberry jam and double cream!!!!! It was the beginning of my birthday celebrations so what the heck. Our next stop was Ashgrove Cheese Company where we met Jane who runs the business and is a friend of Anna-Bel Coppins from Yarrie Station just out of Marble Bar in WA. Great cheese, organic milk, cream and the best painted cows on the front paddock (you'll see them in the pics).
Arriving in Devonport on the 24th April, I celebrated my birthday at the local Irish Pub Molly Malones and Friday morning the 25th went to the Anzac Memorial to remember the fallen. We headed out on the Spirit of Tasmania at 7.30 that night, it was a great trip and one we will remember. Tasmania is a must see again in the future.
