Hello Everyone,
Well we have been having an absolute ball and have done so much in two weeks already! On Monday, 28/11/11 we finally managed to leave Bunbury with the car packed to the brim with no room to spare at all! As we drove off towards Esperance we wondered if we should have got a caravan...Anyway, we had a great drive and by the time we got to Ravensthorpe, about 2 hours outside of Esperance, we had relaxed and started to feel that we were on holiday.
We spent two nights in Esperance with our friends Merv & Jo and their kids Kate and Toby. The weather was glorious when we turned up and the kids a go on the new longboards (their early Christmas present from us) and then we had a BBQ tea. That night it poured with rain and the next day was very windy so we just hung around Esperance. It was great to catch up with everyone.
The next day we embarked on the long drive to Eucla on the WA/SA border. The kids were amazing and did not complain once. We stayed at the Eucla hotel which was clean and had
good food (I had fresh snapper which was superb). The Nullabour was interesing and not as boring as I anticipated. We entered South Austalia and headed for Streaky Bay which is on the North West side of the Eucla Penisula. It is a beautiful place surrounded by wheat farmsIt was blowing a 40 knot "breeze" when we arrive do putting up the tent was q challenge. We arrived there on the Thursday night and Mitchell's 8th birthday was on the Friday. We gave him some little presents in the morning (he got a new scooter before we left) and we explored the area in the hope that Mal would get a surf but it was dead flat. I was secretly happy as I was concerned about the white pointers! Anyway, we then we for fishing on the jetty and we caught 6 crabs and 1 squid. We went a bought 1 doz oysters for $12.00 and some snapper and cooked up a birthday feast. Mitchell said it was his best birthday ever!!
The next day we started heading towards Victoria with the aim of getting on the ferry to Tasmania ASAP. As we were driving we decided to book
and we found out that we couldn't get on the ferry until 31/12/11! We freaked out as we sat down a couple of months ago to book but didn't want the pressure of timelines! I had a meltdown and then Mal rand out South Australian travel guide, Stu Alexander, and he said to go to Coffin Bay which is on the South West side of the Eyre Penisula. It was beautiful as we drove in but Mal said it looked a little boring. We stopped at the jetty to see what people were catching and a young boy caught a King George Whiting so Mitch said he wanted to stay. So we set up camp in the rules driven Coffin Bay Caravan Park (camp kitchen doesn't open until 8.00pm and no excessive noise in the playground). We then went of a fish off the jetty. On the way Mal bought some cockles for bait and met a guy who was on holiday in Coffin Bay and had kids the same day. They organised to meet up the next day to go and explore the Coffin Bay National Park.
The next day we headed off to Gunyah Beach in the
Coffin Bay National Park with Pete (Mal's new friend) & Claudia. It is very similar to Yeagarup Beach near Pemberton. Fun four wheel driving on the sand dunes. We caught lots of Salmon Trout and even though it was very windy it was a good day. We then went to Black Springs and the kids went for a swim. Mal noticed an oyster shell on the beach and grabbed his screwdriver out of the car and went searching for oysters. He came back with 1doz of the famous Coffin Bay Oysters plus ate lots while he was collecting them. We went back to Pete & Claudia's house and had a BBQ tea with all the seafood. A great end to the day.
We checked out Port Lincoln the next day as we had to get supplies. Full of lots of scaly characters. We saw all the large fishing boats though which was interesting. Mal checked out all the surf spots but there was no swell and it was still windy. The locals in Coffin Bay were very friendly and down to earth. We went to the General Store and Mal asked the lady what the weather was doing. She
rolled her eyes and said "well it has been blowing its f....n t...ts off for the last couple of days". I had to walk out so I could have a laugh in the car.. The next day we went to Avoid Point fishing but no luck. We drove around to another beach and Mal & Mitch caught 2 salmon. Mitch was stoked. We cooked them up for tea which was nice.We went on a fishing charter on our last day in Coffin Bay. Initially we only caught a few King George Whiting but in the end we went to a new spot and were catching them every time. Ella was quite the keen fisherman. A good fun day.
The next day we went to Marion Bay which is in the South West of Yorke Penisula. It was a VERY long drive and arrived at this tiny
