Leaving Farina we knew there would not be much more time on the bitumen. After Maree we would be on the Oodnadatta Track and no more bitumen for a while.
The drive to Maree was pretty uneventful. The CoVid border check point at the start of rhe Birdsville Track just as you entered Maree was evident. Looked like a pretty boring deployment as we haven’t run into many travellers coming from that direction.
However, we were barely on to the gravel when an oncoming 4x4 chucked a rock at us and we had a star shaped chip in the wind screen high up in the middle of the drivers view. We heard the ping. It wasn’t until Joan said, “Is that a chip?” that Greg even realised it had happened. We knew a crack was imminent.
We stopped for coffee at the sculpture park where we first met S and G last trip. Lake Eyre South was glistening in the sun shine so we stopped there for a few photos. We knew we could be up for some corrugations up until Coward Springs, but things had improved a bit. Yes, a bit!
There are not a lot of bushes to sneak behind to relieve oneself so when Joan got a little desperate because the caravan loo wouldn’t open, we stopped in at Coward Springs, paid the $2 day fee to use the loos and continued on.
We got to William Creek at 1.30 rushed into the pub hoping to have a beer and a burger just like last time as it was soooo good. Blow me down! It was chef’s lunchtime off, so only pies and pasties were available. We commented to each other about no good respectable pub would not be open for Friday lunch. It was part way through our … delicious pasties that we realised it was actually SATURDAY.
This is where you booked into the Caravan Park too so we did that. In the mentime someone else came in, booked into the caravan park, and also the pub for dinner. Realising our disappointment at no Pub lunch, the girl yelled across the bar, “So am I booking you too in too?” Done!
Across the road is the Caravan Park. Set up where ever you like but
try not to take up 2 sites was the only instruction. We were horrified to discover the fridge was not working! Noooo! But delighted when we noticed a wire had come adrift with all the jostling over the corrugations. Phew! We opened the fridge to find the lid had come off the coffee grounds tin and we had coffee grounds everywhere. What a mess!
Being Saturday, it was TA note day so Greg spent the afternoon working on that while Joan started on the blog. To do both of these you need connectivity and 240v power and these don’t always coexist out here. Today, was our lucky day.
Before we knew it, we needed to be over at dinner.
The meals are pretty good in these Outback places … and the wine list was good too.
Our intelligence gathering on road conditions was that the Oodnadatta Track was really good, better than Maree to William Creek and that the road into The Painted Desert was really rough. Food for thought!
