Homeward Bound across The Nullarbor Plain
Nullabor - Latin for Nullis Arboris, meaning no trees and that it was, a 146.6 kms of the longest straight stretch of road in Australia was a great drive that we enjoyed over two days and with two 45 minute time changes, stopping the first night at The Fraser Sheep Station, very nice spot, here our Barb got to sleep in a donga, next to a 60 plus year old fellow, who was cycling Australia, such a lucky girl! Then the second night was at The Nullarbor Motel (wouldn’t recommend).
Crossing the Nullabor included passing 2 dead camels on the road, numerous kangi road kills and the amazing views of the Great Australian Bight and out to the Great Southern Ocean, all while we listened to either “Macca’s Australia All Over “,such a good show when you’re on the road or Ian singing and drumming along to Joe Cocker, great entertainment for Barb and I.
At the end of the road, we then dutifully handed over all our fruit and veges at the South Australian quarantine “as you do”.
Next night we found our way to a super little B&B in Port Augusta, in
fact it was a whole house “Tottenham B&B”great place with all the mod cons, we even managed a couple of loads of washing in between dinner and bed.
Next morning we did a Stainholm tour around Port Augusta, Port Germein and Port Pirie enroute to The Clare valley and a nice lunch at the Salt and Vine Winery and a visit to avery special Jesuit winery at Seven Hills which was established in 1851 and currently producing most of the fortified wines for the churches in Australia.
That night we landed at another beaut little B&B in Kapunda, Australia’s first minning town run by a nice lady named Terry and her Hubby.
Next day we headed for a motel stop at Balranald enroute to Parkes and Tim.
Excitement was building!!!
We hit Parkes about 1pm and headed straight for the Courthouse and called Tim, he came scooting down the road, into the car park and we all took turns at a great round of BIG HUGS and lots of smiles,it was just sooooooooooo good to see him and he looked so fit and well!
Once he had finished work and we had checked in the Coachman motel we all headed
for the Pub and some rounds of guiness, beers, V&T’s and lots and lots of laughs, chatter and more laughs, which went well into the night and then continued at breaky the next morning before we said farewell to Tim(just for a few days, until he got back to Sydney) and then headed off towards Sydney and home.
Mixed feelings were beginning to set in, but we did realise how much we all have to look forward to, in so many ways!
But it really has been the most wonderful trip and our time with Barb had just been so special for us all and we will miss our little Canvas Chateau, in our 5 million star resort, surrounded by Red dirt and our copious daily doses of non stop laughter.
We hit Sydney and home about 5pm and yes it was good to sleep in our home bed.
The next 15 days will/have been quite hectic, but good, catching up with all our best family and friends and with 2 very special highlights being Lucille’s Christening (surrounded by bubbles) and a super 4 days down in the ACT with our very best mates Bren ,Rob, Rachel
and Laura.
Hope you all enjoyed the Outback.
Next chapter will be from jazzy New Orleans, meantime love and a big hi to you all!
