Richmond
Jack, Olivia and Luke with the dinosaur At Richmond. We arrived in Winton. We spent two nights free camping just outside of town and did the Waltzing Matilda museum, The Age of Dinosaurs tour, The opal mine and the open theatre tour.
The watzing matilda museum was great. It talked about the history of the song ofcourse and had a heap of other historical items on display. We really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it as a place to go.
Above all the absolute highlight was the age of dinosaurs tour. This is a working laboratory gathering and preserving dinosaur fossils found in the Winton region. It is just amazing to go into the laboratory and actually see the scientists working with fossilised bones and all sorts of things. The kids loved it and so did we!
From here we headed out to a working station called Carisbrooke. What an awesome place it was! We camped next to the shearers sheds and enjoyed three nights of the best star displays ever! While we were staying here we joined in on a tag a long tour of the property. It is over 55, 000 acres big and surrounded by a big escarpment that gave great views over
the surrounding area. We walked into a big gorge to view aboriginal rock art, fossicked for opal (Jack found an awesome piece!), stopped for a billy of tea and enjoyed the awesome views from the top. While we were staying here we also went to The Lark Quarry to see the dinosaur tracks. Lark Quarry was good and we are glad we went because it was very interesting but it was a little boring for the kids. The tracks through the rock are just amazing and the story to go with it had us engrossed. We also visited Old Cork Homestead on our way back. This homestead was originally established in 1864 and must have been a grand place in its time.
We left Winton and continued down to Longreach. What a great town Longreach is. The people were friendly and it was just a really nice place. We visited the Stockmans Hall of Fame (awesome), went on a Cobb and Co horse carriage ride. They get these horses up to a full gallop through the bush and Gav was lucky enoungh to ride up top at the front with the driver!
One of the highlights
Cobb and Co Longreach
Don't you just love our bonnets!! at Longreach was the rodeo. It was a campdraft event that went over two days and it was awesome. Those cowboys are soooo brave!! There was bull riding, horse bucking and all sorts of events. The kids really loved it.
From Longreach we travelled into Carnarvon Gorge. This place is definitely a highlight of the whole trip.
Day 1 We did a 7 hour walk into the gorge and viewed the most spectacular rock art display i have ever seen, a beautiful ampitheatre carved out of the sandstone, a moss garden, another smaller gorge and a stunning canyon. The kids were so amazed by what they were seeing that they didn't even notice they had walked all day and over 15 Kms!
Day 2 We did another 6 hour walk and saw just as many beautiful, beautiful sights. This place is somewhere I would highly recommend. The campground was expensive but worth every penny!
We spent three nights at Carnarvon Gorge and are now at Cania Gorge just near Monto. It is bloody Cold!!!!! The coldest we have experienced this whole trip. I hope it isn't still this cold back at Brisbane! We have treated the
kids to three nights in a Big 4 Caravan Park so they are off enjoying the jumping castle, water slides and park, bird feeding and tonight is pizza night and a family movie. It is more than we would usually spend on camping but we figured they have been so awesome this trip it would be really nice for them!
Ohh, i nearly forgot - we celebrated Jacks 7th birthday while travelling from Longreach to Carnarvon. Luckily we could get a cake at Longreach and I have been carrying all his birthday presents ever since we left home. He was very happy and had heaps of fun.
