Weipa to Batavia Downs

Wednesday 20th July 2011 Weipa to Moreton Telegraph Station

Backtracked to the Batavia Downs road and from there to the Peninsula Development Road, which probably has the worst surface we’ve encountered so far, with creek crossings and big corrugations. No doubt this road is fairly heavily used, in fact when we stopped to take photos at one creek, 3 4WDs stopped too, and probably 6 more went past. Moreton Telegraph Station is a lovely stop, next to the Wenlock River. I went for a walk just near the homestead and was lucky enough to see a Magnificent Riflebird (and heard it too). He was glossy black with a blue/turquoise sort of collar, and about the size of a currawong. It was quite damp overnight, and cooled to about 14 or 15 degrees, but as soon as the sun came over the trees the temperature soared. I also saw (at breakfast time) a lovely parrot rather the reverse of the King Parrots we see at home: green chest, red back and wings.
