Today being the 31st October is my travelling partner and hubby’s birthday - happy birthday Graham - he probably won’t mind me saying that he is 62 today! It’s hard to believe that he’s actually two weeks older than Prince Charles but looks considerably younger (where are my glasses!!).
Sarah phoned in the morning to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her Dad and so we both had a lovely long chat with her. She and Darryl were preparing to fit a wood burning stove in their living room so we hope that went well - it should make the house much more ‘cosy’ as will the new radiator just fitted in the conservatory. It always makes us feel homesick when we talk to Sarah and Darryl - we look forward to eventually seeing all the alterations to their house. Sarah had emailed one of her unique birthday wishes which David was able to print off for us. He presented Graham with a genuine Ekubra hat, a Queenslander, which was a great surprise. The hat really suits him and makes him look a proper Aussie!! Thanks very much, Dave. Graham also had a parcel to open from England - Barb and Tony,
his sister and her hubbie, had sent a CD by a local singer and a couple of packets of Mars Planets (these were topical because only recently we had been in the Astrology Capital of Australia, Coonabarabran). The chocolate didn’t last long and the CD has entertained us when we’ve been travelling. Cards managed to find their way to Warwick from Charlie (hi Charlie!) and Enid plus an email from Claire. Graham had a boring but useful pair of new trainers from me (on condition that he threw out the old smelly pair which he hasn’t done yet - phew!!!) and we are still on the hunt for a CD by Troy Cassar-Daley.
We had booked a table for Sunday lunch at a restaurant called Spring Creek situated at Carr’s Lookout which was about 8 kms on from Queen Mary Falls near Killarney. It’s about a 35 minute drive from Warwick and we had thought about going there when my sister, Daphne, was with us but its opening times never quite coincided with our plans. David’s friend Mele had accepted our invitation to join us so we picked her up on the way. Earlier in the morning she had
been into her church where she had helped set out one of many floral displays, one with a Tongan influence. She was there to talk on behalf of her group to explain to the congregation the background to the display and how it fitted in with the Bible quotation it represented.
On the way to Spring Creek we passed the café at Queen Mary Falls and the car park was full of vintage English sports cars - it was a good thing that we weren’t stopping there as we would never have dragged David away from them! We had time to stroll up to Carr’s Lookout where the view was stunning - it was a lovely clear day. For once, though, the photo we took on the delayed timer didn’t quite work as we chopped the top of David’s head off - sorry about that!!
Every seat in the restaurant has wonderful views - it is built right on the edge of the summit of Spring Creek hill. It’s a very popular location so we were lucky that we had reserved a table. We all enjoyed our meals. After sharing a couple of very generous starters, three of
us chose barramundi and one a curry. Only one of us had room for a dessert - who could that have been?
On the way back we stopped to stroll to Queen Mary Falls which still looks spectacular because of the recent rain. We also had a quick look at Daggs Falls, another splendid spectacle which can be viewed from the car park. By the time we got back to Warwick and dropped Mele off it was just beginning to get dark - it had been a lovely day.
We had missed a phone call from my brother, Rod, so David rang him back. He had phoned to wish Graham a happy birthday from the Calne clan so we all had a good chat with him. All in all it had been a very special birthday.
